Genipa
(genipa americana)
Also known as genipapo, jagua, tapaculo, vito or ñandipá
Native to the tropical forests of North and South America, as well as the Caribbean, these large grey berries house a purplish, sour pulp. The fruit is often combined with sugar and cooked down into a syrup, which is then used to flavour beverages and deserts. It's also used to make preserves or marmelade. If you'd like to eat it raw, it's best to wait until the fruit is slightly overripe since it can be quite tough before that stage, be careful not to eat too much though, as the fruit can have a laxative effect. If you intend to grow these yourself you should be aware of fruit bats it may attract, those guys love these fruits!
