Maybe you‘re the hero of your era, or maybe you‘re simply some nobody that has been fighting against monsters for a while and knows their stuff. But wherever you‘re from, it‘s a place with rather innovative methods of keeping monsters at bay…

When the Chain lands in this new era, they have barely any time to orient themselves. It‘s a flurry of sensations for even the ones to recover the fastest from the balance-warping portal.
The first thing is the sight of the ground under their feet, followed by a air-ripping screech echoing towards them - they can‘t determine if it‘s in rage or agony. All they know, under the thrumming of their blood, that something big is there, something dangerous. Is someone being attacked, or is something doing the attacking?
The next thing: a hoarde of monsters, none of them a major threat, all of them driven by fear in their limbs, rushing towards them. They slay whichever they conveniently reach, but as the horrific wails of uncertain origin continue, the strategists agree with exchanged glances that there are bigger problems than fleeing monsters.
The Chain regroups in the seconds after the strange frenzy, the silence now suspiciously hanging over the area deafening. They move towards the source of the sound-now-gone, and find… you. You, with a strange instrument in your hand, watching them with unease.
This is the opposite of what you expected, you all think.
You might eye them in suspicion at their foreign clothing and weapons, maybe above all their number, but after the discovery that the origin of the sound is neither a person in death throes nor a giant monster, the Chain approach you with little hostility.
You exchange careful words; they ask after the place (weird), the year (even weirder), and about you (stranger danger).
For some reason you decide that it‘s alright if you spend at least a few hours with them, during which no few inquiries are made about your skull-shaped instrument.
Time
He feels a bit reminded of the Sun‘s Song, as it can also keep monsters off his heels. You tell him that your method of doing so, while also functioning over sound, doesn‘t have anything to do with magic, simply with making them think you‘re more dangerous than them. He tells you that doesn‘t matter - they both fulfill their purpose, don‘t they?
Overall curious, but not disturbed. He‘s seen worse things.
When asked wether he‘d like his more common masks to be modified with a whistle like yours, he declines. His masks already hold power of their own, no need to amplify that or give himself more reasons to use them.
Twilight
He‘s used disturbing artifacts himself in his quest, a death whistle won‘t make him crack now. He mostly listens in on you and the others and laughs about their awe to himself.
If you choose to join the Chain and make use of the whistle to ward off monsters, you can occasionally hear Wolfie join in. Later on, when Twilight emerges form wherever he disappeared to, he jokes that they now have their own warcry. He doubts any battle horn would be this effective.
Sky
Unsettled by the unsavory aftertaste of it. He grew up on tiny islands in a knight academy - where he‘s from, it‘s no use chasing monsters away because they‘ll return sooner or later anyway. Better to just get rid of them when you find them.
As Four wonders out loud about the possibility of making more, he almost wants to protest. Are they sure that‘s a good idea? He‘s very glad when Four waves his own reasoning off.
Only warms up to your death whistle when you mention that human screams are only one variety of many sounds, and yours simply happens to work well in preventing combat. But there are also allegedly some that sound like thunder or strong wind, or dangerous animals. He resolves to, should the Chain come across more of those whistles, secure himself one that sounds like wind.
Four
Fascinated by the idea of basically using mimicry against the monsters and already plans on incorporating the principle into some future projects of his. Maybe not sound, but something similar to the mirror shield, something bright and blinking that basically signals that it can afford to draw attention from dangerous beasts?
The first one to ask if he could borrow it for examination with the explanation that he might be able to fashion similar whistles, before declining the idea himself - the build of the whistle is probably way too complicated for the tools he currently has at his disposal, and besides, if they all had one, monsters would just get used to the sound; no way would they keep to the rule of using it only in emergencies. It‘ll have to stay a vague idea for now.
Still thinks it‘s really cool, but his curiosity about it is quickly sated.
Warriors
His inner strategist says that it‘s a useful asset to prevent harm to them, but could be risky if they get so used to hearing it that they get desensitised to actual screams of pain. Also has to agree with Four‘s point that it only works if used rarely.
Generally chill with it, though. If it used magic, it would be different and genuinely creepy, but as it stands, it‘s more his own memories of the cabarets from the War of Eras that come up. Nothing that would send him spiralling, but it‘s highly unpleasant, nevertheless.
A bit amused when the idea of the whistle as their own kind of battle horn comes up. Declines it, though. It might draw the wrong kind of attention from those who‘d otherwise be on their side; like it happened when they‘d sought you out, prepared for battle.
Wild
He wishes he had something similar during his journey - he could‘ve avoided many a-wound! Especially since your whistle operates on exactly the same idea as some of his clothes. He immediately shows you his radiant set and the masks he got from Kilton, in much the same manner as ‚look here, we match!‘
The one to start asking if death whistles could be integrated into clothes, and even asks Time if that‘s something for him. A bit miffed when Four concludes that that‘s not something that‘ll happen in the near future.
Wind
He matches Wild in excitement, and pouts at you when you hold it out of his reach at first. You make him promise not to blow into it before you let him touch it. He in turn makes you promise to let him play it when it‘s the right time. Shrugs that it‘ll be better to see monsters flee before him after playing it, anyway.
Once the time has come and you hand him your instrument, he pushes so much air into it that he goes dizzy for a moment afterwards. His recovery isn‘t sped up by how giddy he is.
Legend
He‘s not unfamiliar with people pretending to be monsters to protect themselves, not after encountering the cult around them in Lorule. But while those had eventually started to believe the disguise they put on for survival, you don‘t seem to think the same. The whistle is a powerful tool for you, and he can respect that.
Does eye it - the collector in him is itching to ask about where to get another. He doesn‘t ask, but when Sky wonders the same, he listens keenly. Of course he doesn‘t want to use it, not after the points the Captain made, but it could become useful should they ever go their separate ways again and some of them lead into trouble.
Hyrule
You intentionally draw attention to yourself? And get away with it? Hyrule is stunned by that idea that somehow never came to him, not that he thinks he would‘ve done it if he had. The thought of doing that makes him nauseous… He‘d rather go either full-on combat or stealth, thank your very much.
When it‘s brought up that it‘s only used in emergencies, he relaxes - so his preferred methods are still the ones that will be tried first.
summary: you and chris used to date in high school but broke things off, however you stayed friends until you’re both at a party and had a little too much to drink
genre: fluff
warnings: alcohol (FIRST TIME WRITING, MIGHT BE ASS)
it was another one of tara's party you got invited to. you've been friends with the triplets for all of high school and eventually became their best friend regardless of you and chris' dating history. even after the break up you and chris stayed close friend's, just like tara and jake.
"hey y/n, you look a little too sober, drink this!" tara hollered buzzed while shoving the red plastic cup into your hand.
you accepted the cup thankfully and laughed at tara's state.
"come on, drink!" tara demanded with a lazy smile on her face due to the alcohol she consumed.
you brought the cup to your mouth and took a big sip, bringing the cup back down you and scrunched your face noticing the strong taste of alcohol.
"tara did you even mix the vodka with anything?" you asked slowly relaxing your face again.
"just a little" she hissed while showing the approximate amount of soda in the cup.
you shrugged and took another sip of the cup, holding your breath to not taste the alcohol that much.
"there you are!" someone called behind you, you turn around and see chris and matt standing a few meters away from me. tara noticed and took that as her sign to run off back to jack and the others.
you smile seeing two very familiar faces behind you.
"we've been looking for you!" matt exclaimed and pulled you into an unexpected hug "you just left" he mumbled, clearly drunk.
you hug him back and just laugh at him already being this drunk despite all of you being here for about 20 minutes.
matt pulls back and smiles drunkenly at you before turning around and just walking away.
"had something to drink yet?" you asked chris. he doesn't answer for a few seconds and just stares at you.
"a little" chris declared. by the way he looked at you and how he couldn't answer immediately answers your question.
"you're drunk?" you questioned with a cheekily smile already knowing the answer.
"yeah" he chuckled while coming closer to you.
he took you by your arm and started dragging you trough the house until you reached the garden.
"needed some fresh air" chris says while closing the door behind you and making his way to one of the garden chairs. still holding onto you he pulls you down to sit next to him, he lays his head on your shoulder and sighs. the warmth of his body making you feel more comfortable so you also lean your head on his.
"i'm really greatful we're still friends, you know" he mumbles, staring into the the darkness of the garden.
you smile at his comment and take the hand that was laying on his chest into yours.
"yeah, me too." you take a quick break saying nothing "i still care for you" you continue and lean more onto him.
he chuckles at your remark, barely keeping his eyes open due to the alcohol.
"i do too.. you know ever since we broke up a couple of years ago, i realized that i couldn't fall in love with anyone" he ensured.
he takes his head off your shoulder and starts studying your face. it has been three years since the two of you ended things and never in those three years has chris said anything about your past relationship.
you weren't sure what to say. it was probably the alcohol in chris speaking.
you looked back at him waiting for him to say something.
he took your hand and connected them. it was silent for a while, a comfortable silence.
"y/n.." he started but you wouldn't let him finish.
"please don't chris." you stopped him from continuing his sentence knowing exactly what he wanted to say.
"you know it's better this way.." you stated and pulled your hand back, waiting for an answer from chris.
he turned away for a short amount of time before turning back to you. you looked at him, still waiting before he lets out a deep breath and pulls you into a kiss.
you were shocked by the sudden action but kissed him back, ignoring what just said.
Wether you‘re new in Hyrule or not, you‘ll sooner or later have to learn about the different dynamics within the Chain.

Four: ~A
Wether you were born in a Hyrule of any era or not, you‘re quick to pick up on any differences within the Chain. You don‘t have the choice not to, really, considering the come-and-go territorial urges over some heroes‘ closer friends and possessions, or others‘ monthly stress and nervousness. If you can‘t conclude the reason for these cyclical phenomena (maybe you just wonder if everyone here has periods and then shrug and go on), either Time or Four will take you aside and explain - as this is basically The Talk, of course it‘s better done with tact and privacy.
With the knowledge about secondary genders and designations and scents in mind, you can slowly build a picture of everybody‘s status. It starts to make sense why Wild is so keen on being the cook and why Hyrule insists on the Healer role, and why Twilight routinely turns around and counts everybody, even if you‘re in a safe location.
And then there‘s Four.
While Four had been born as an alpha, his body had been split before his puberty had had the time to finish his development, meaning that now, while technically an adult on all other accounts, his secondary designation is a little all over the place. Since it doesn‘t seem to have any severe consequences for his bodily health and he never put much of his self-esteem on being a capital a Alpha, he‘s not too hung up about it, though.
When asked about it, he‘ll just call himself an alpha. He has the fangs, even if his scent and more base urges are luckily usually rather light. When he scents his clothing and the belongings of his friends and loved ones, it‘s less a need and more a comforting routine; something that he‘ll forgot to have done almost immediately, and when he catches a trace of it again later in the day, it will make him smile just a bit.
Around you, the most his secondary gender will come into play is as playful barings of his teeth and gifts throughout your courtship and relationship and many reminders to stay safe and close and here with him - and also the occasional anxiety about seeing you interact with people that align more stereotypically to their respectives designations. He doesn‘t like to mention that tiny, biting seed of doubt in his chest.
It takes time for it to wither, but any outbursts of envy-induced jealousy over you are worked off over chores; he takes care to never let off steam at you, and while it won‘t happen immediately, you will receive an explanation, stuttered and slow and awkward as it may be. Slowly, he‘ll gain confidence into your lack of care for his designation, then in your interest in him, and slowly, though he doesn‘t notice, in himself.
Green: Ω
A bit of a surprise to the colours, though not much more; especially not to those that know him well. In hindsight, the way Green likes to play the role of the mother hen, counting everybody, mediating, fretting over the safety of your current camp and organization of tasks makes a little bit more sense now. He doesn‘t like the group being split up for too long - the colours all know just how much it sucks to not know how everybody else is doing in dire moments.
He can deal with life on the road well enough. After all, it has to get done. But he won’t truly have his peace of mind unless at his home, in his own space, surrounded by things and people he knows better than himself. And he won‘t care in the long run, but he will pout if you decline resting in his room. He totally doesn‘t take it personal and wonder about how to improve his nest; one of the best things about his secondary gender, in his opinion. He‘ll probably teach the others how to construct one so they don‘t always crowd his.
In times of anxiety, he will steal some of your laundry to stuff into the amalgation of softness and cuddle with it. He won‘t tell you outright that he did it, but you‘ll find a note with an apology and the washed clothes after some days. If you want to take his clothes in exchange, he‘ll be over the moon; constantly glancing at you with a giddy, pink face. Doesn‘t matter that they‘re a little tight around your shoulders, he just won‘t mention that it makes them nice to stare at.
Blue: Β
This one feels a little conflicted about his designation. On one hand, his instinctual urges are less extreme and moreso a mix of what alphas and omegas display, both of which he likes to do. On the other, he does mourn the image of the stereotypical alpha he might‘ve been just a little bit. As he matures and joins the Chain, that tiny sting becomes less of a sore spot and more of a joke used to dig at him - by the other colours and himself. It stays harmless as long as it‘s not insisted on.
He has high standards for where he sleeps on the road. It must be clean, it must be orderly, it must be just a little bit away from adjacent sleeping bags. Sometimes, he allows you to share with him, though on those occasions, you will sleep with him in his spot. He‘s just a little prickly about that particular part of their routine of setting up camp.
Similarly to Green, he will beam an uncharacteristically shy grin should you wear what he gifts you. And there‘s no reason why you shouldn‘t, really: sturdy yet light leather armour, a flexible armband with carved patterns, hand-made earrings with tiny seas shells he collected from Wind‘s era. He likes to show off his skills, and this is another way of doing so. He demonstrates his crafts by his partner deciding that they‘re good enough to parade them around; by making his partner just the tiniest bit more good-looking than you already are. (He doesn‘t need gifts for himself, but he won‘t complain about hug and some praise.)
Red: Α
He struggles the most with his designation - he can’t stop biting his tongue with his suddenly pointier fangs, sneezing around stronger smells, getting anxious when a stranger approaches the colours or you. On normal days, he can take a minute to himself to calm down and decide if he wants to leave the situation for now or not. He’s quickly gotten over the reason for his panic and is gladly back to his loud, happy self.
On the rare, bad days, it’s a cycle feeding into itself. The tiny traits denoting his secondary gender make him nervous, which makes his subconscious coping habits starker, which frustrates and annoys him. He‘s not always able to crawl away into a private space, though, and when he isn‘t, he sticks to you and the colours; he knows your scents well enough that he doesn‘t register them anymore beyond a sense of ‚familiar, normal, calm‘. He doesn‘t talk or eat much so he doesn‘t have to remind himself of the teeth taking up so much space in his mouth now, and might even grab a sleeve to hold onto while you‘re out and about. Not exactly typical of an alpha, but anybody who comments it can piss off according to collective opinion.
In the early days of your relationship, Red took up the habit of sticking his face into the soft side of your neck to inhale deeply, something you might find bemusing, but ultimately not terrible except for how cold his nose can be. He doesn‘t mind your automatic shrieking when it is, he just giggles and draws away a little. Occasionally, if he‘s feeling particularly nonchalant about them, he might even bare his teeth at you in a bout of play, though it never seems threatening with how his eyes crease with the grin that appears whenever you return the gesture.
Vio: Β
Honestly the chillest with how everything turned out. Doesn‘t really act on any baser instincts unless he‘s feeling anxious, which is rarely the case. And even then, it mostly shows as keeping a hand on someone to keep them in sight and joining Green in his fretting and counting (even though Vio is quieter about it).
There is one thing that he likes to do purely for the sake of its effects, and that is playful biting. Perhaps a little surprising considering his usual collected demeanor, but that‘s just an image for strangers and acquaintances. You and the colours in private? You‘re gonna get it, and it is blunt teeth lightly denting your palm because you were tired enough of his rant about overhearing a random person getting a historical event hysterically wrong to put your hand in the danger zone and over his mouth. Your fault, really.
If you want to see him thrown off-rhythm for once, treat him as if you‘re still courting. Leave him gifts wafting with your own scent, clothes that smell of you without being rife for the laundry, ask him wether you can kiss or hold hands and don‘t accept anything but muttered consent after he looks at you quizzically and then away once he concludes your intention.
summary: In which Liam and Zayn are head over heels in love but dance around it like it's a secret, something precious to keep to themselves, something fragile they don't dare confront just in case it breaks.
