OKAY Y’ALL BIG NEWS (well not really but I’m oddly excited about this) so you all know George Button, right? He looks like this?
Well I was scrolling through pinterest and looking at portraits (as one does) when I found a familiar face
This is the portrait!!! And the guy’s actual name was George! (It was probably easier for the idiots to stick with that name rather than come up with a new one)
George Venables-Vernon, 7th Baron Vernon - Wikipedia
Here’s his wiki page if you wanna read it, there’s not much information and his wife’s name wasn’t even Fanny but you can still take a look
Here’s all the portraits I could find, some are more low quality for whatever reason
So uh, enjoy the George references I guess?
george button fascinates me. he's gay. he has threesomes. he's been dead the whole time and not in the ghost sense. fanny references him constantly. she hates him. she mourned him. the only visual we have of him is a portrait. he pawned her jewellery. he called her darling in the note he left for her about said pawning. she reminisces fondly over him. she wishes he could've been alive in the twenty-first century so he could love freely. he fucking defenestrated her. also, and i cannot stress this enough, we have never met him. anyway as i was saying he has threesomes
Do you lay on your bed staring at the ceiling while listening to The Beatles' "For No One" and think about Humphrey and Sophie, Fanny and George, Pat and Carol, and Julian and Margot driving yourself to the brink of insanity or are you normal
Ok but the way ghosts writes multilayered/conflicting romantic relationships,,,,,,
Fanny hates George. He never gave her what she needed in life. Every time she brings him up, it’s to vent about him. He killed her and had no issue covering it up and living without her. She has to relive this brutal betrayal every day. But she stops Alison from throwing his portrait away. She doesn’t like to look at it but can’t bear the thought of not having it. She uses it to remember him and their life together. She still thinks she needs him even though he never needed her.
Pat adores Carol. Or he did until he found out she had been cheating on him with his best friend for most of their marriage. He was furious. Memories of his family were all he had left and she took that from him too. He screams at Alison to send her away, that he never wants to see her ever again, to kill her. But every time he recounts a memory of her he can’t help but smile. He gets a far-off dreamy look like he’s falling in love for the first time all over again. If you asked, he would probably say that despite everything, she’s one of the best things that ever happened to him.
Humphrey wanted to love Sophie, he really did. She spent over twenty years hating him and he tried to content himself with that. They didn’t share a bedroom, couldn’t have a conversation, and weren’t even able to make it through a single meal without someone storming out. But she cared enough to put an immediate and decisive end to any unkind whispers behind his back. He cared enough to sacrifice his own life so she could live. And even though any nice comment they made to each other was laced with passive aggression, several hundred years later he still thinks of her fondly and mourns what could’ve been.
I wonder how the other ghosts reacted to become ghosts for the first time. Robin mentions that everyone tries to leave at first, I wonder how many times Captain ran full speed at the gate, or if Pat panicked and tried to reason with the others that he needed to see his family. How many times did Fanny scream at George before she gave up, how much of Isabelle’s life did Thomas get to see. Once Humphrey got used to Robin, did they spend a lot of time together? Did Kitty try to join in on Eleanor’s life if she both outlived her and stayed at the house?
just attempted to draw up the button family tree because i was curious as to what alison and thomas’ relation is.
so, based off the line where lady b says she is heather’s great grandmother, and this:
(alison is the bottom right corner, heather is the only child in the middle)
i have determined:
heather button is alison’s great grandfather’s brother in law’s sister’s granddaughter
and thomas?
thomas is alison’s great grandfather’s brother in law’s sister’s husband’s great-great grandfather’s cousin.
I know we are all looking forward to seeing the Captain and Kitty’s backstories/deaths in season 5 but I’m also really hoping we get to see more of Fanny’s backstory. Even though her death was revealed in the first episode, the only backstory we’ve seen was in the second Christmas special which is a real shame. I want to see how she went from being a fiercely intelligent young woman with ambitions to save her family to a bitter old woman who’s obsessed with being “proper”. There’s so much to explore in her marriage to George and her relationship with her child(ren). Also I’d love to see her with her pets.
