A Room with a View (1986) + Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) Part 2/3: Character Dynamics and Dialogue
yes i am still thinking about georgelucy and roryjess connections but this time i’ve been reading the book and these lines are knocking me out because of how insane they’re making me. it is just perfect to me, lucy behaving and building herself around the way she sees other people acting and deceiving everyone including herself, she bathed in the lake too until she was caught, if she lived the way she played life would be very interesting for her and them too indeed. that rory really doesn’t know what love is or how to define it, that throughout her entire love life she grapples with saying it and what it’s supposed to mean. her mom said she loved her dad and— what? she never gets to finish the sentence. he didn’t stay? it wasn’t enough? but she’s supposed to say it, and she’s supposed to love dean, and she’s supposed to love logan, and what’s the difference anyway. but she never tells jess she loves him, she gets close, i think i may have loved you, but its still vague. and isnt that more telling than i can’t help it, i’m in love with him! and i love dean and dean is my boyfriend and he’s going to be my boyfriend forever! and then you have george and jess far freer and independent but still lonely still melancholy still silent and dour. because the universe wouldn’t fit! i wanna be good life’s just not letting me! SAD BOY! WHAT’S WRONG?
Since you're my Literati/A Room With A View mutual, I was just thinking about the similar ways Charlotte/Lucy and Lorelai/Rory talk about George and Jess. Like that conversation between Charlotte and Lucy after The Kiss, about how to "handle the Situation," where Lucy insists that George won't tell anyone. They haven't known each other very long, but Lucy knows him. "He won't talk. He never talks! One's lucky to get a 'Yes' or 'No' out of him!" But Charlotte says that she's met the "Type" before, "And they seldom keep their exploits to themselves." And isn't that just like Rory and Lorelai's conversation after the basket bidding? Lorelai, out of a similar desire to protect, insists that she's known "guys like Jess" before and attributes all these sinister motives to him that just aren't there.
And then I think about Charlotte's conversation with Mr. Emerson towards the end of ARWAV... Like when Charlotte asks, "So he never told you what happened in Italy?" and Mr. Emerson says, "Not one word!" and then she says, "Oh. Lucy said he wouldn't." And then she finds out that the only thing George DID tell his father, even after everything, was that he "loves her." 😩 And like... that moment when Charlotte realizes that she'd completely misjudged both George's character and his feelings for Lucy, and I WISH we could have gotten a moment like that with Lorelai!!! Can you IMAGINE? 😩
very honored to be your literati/ARWAV mutual, it’s always very fun to discuss this bc its so. mind boggling! but YEAH! there’s so many similarities in the dynamic between lucy and charlotte & rory and lorelai, ESPECIALLY when it comes to george/jess. and i always did find it interesting that charlotte and lorelai both were always capable of understanding jess/george; like when george makes his plead to lucy, that charlotte wouldn’t “come between [them] again, not if you understood.” and charlotte was. AFFECTED by this, even if she pushed it away until the talk with mr. emerson. which reminds me of “because it’s probably hard for him,” and “he knows.” like there IS this capacity in them to understand george/jess but they actively, like you said, attribute these sinister motives that aren’t there out of a misguided desire to protect rory/lucy (for various complicated reasons).
and another lorelai & rory conversation that PLAGUES me when thinking about charlotte & lucy is the one in Help Wanted, specifically the part “i know you think jess is your friend, but he’s not. he is a completely out of control, really angry kid who has no respect for luke, who has no respect for me.” and god that really just is charlotte warning lucy about the “type” of man that george is, isn’t it.
ooh yeah. yeah my brain is hurting now, the charlotte & mr. emerson conversation towards the end… the fact that it’s so clear that lorelai NEVER took the relationship between rory and jess seriously, just like charlotte never really did with george and lucy, not until that conversation anyway. that rory’s 18 and it’s “time for a jess,” or her mocking and making fun of jess’ “i love you” confession in Last Week Fights while ON the phone with rory, being so genuinely convinced that the situation hasn’t really affected her, that she is fine and better off without jess. even though she isn’t fine, and lucy isn’t all that fine for that matter either. just this refusal to see that it is genuine for them both, that george/jess only ever loved lucy/rory…
and just talking about this YEAH it makes me wish for a scene like that with lorelai, because we NEVER get one. i mean even in AYITL (as ridiculous as it is) we still have lorelai being VERY skeptical of the validity of rory and jess’ relationship/friendship. god even just imagining it like i am tearing up a little honestly… i imagine it’d probably happen, if keeping in parallel with ARWAV, after the “come with me” sequence, maybe in season 6 or so we get an extra jess cameo, but the conversation happens with luke and lorelai, just because i can imagine luke in that mr. emerson role pretty clearly and we do get that “i told i loved her,” scene with jess and luke in LWF, which is honestly a perfect setup for this conversation. because all jess told him was that he loved her. lorelai would do the charlotte thing and passive aggressively complain about him, and luke would defend him, because he’s that kinda guy and knows that jess loves her because… yeah. it’s rory, still. 🥲
Ok, now I'm thinking about the similarities between Mr. Emerson's gleeful "So! She's not marrying Mr. Vyse!" and Luke's reaction of "Wow! This is great!" to finding out that Rory had broken up with Dean and was now with Jess instead ("I'll tell Dean you said that."). 😂 They're just rooting for their guy to get the girl! Who cares about that other guy? Hahaha! "There's a time for keeping quiet, and there's a time for speaking out!"
HI!! i forgot about this so sorry for replying late but YES… mr. emerson and luke both being so supportive of their boys its VERY cute. mr. emerson and luke ARE very different but both of them really setting examples for george/jess is so important to me i think that was really sweet, george and mr.emerson being seen as that strange, radical father-son duo and luke and jess being very similar in their own rights haha.
oh! also! mr. emerson and luke asking lucy/rory to help george/jess, lucy to help george stop brooding so much, and rory to tutor jess.
“i don’t require you to fall in love with my boy, but please help him. if only one could stop him from brooding. (…) make my boy realize that, at the side of the everlasting why, there is a yes, and a yes and a yes!”
“i need someone jess is gonna listen to, someone he’s gonna… i don’t know, look up to. that sure isn’t me and it sure isn’t some tutor. he likes rory and rory’s on the path that i’d like to see jess on, school and college. he needs somebody he respects doing what he should be doing and rory’s the only person i can think of who fits that description.”
