OUR GOOD FRIEND SHOE DESIGNER GEORGIE BEE IN VICE - SEE HER WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY.............
Georgie Bee is unusually and impressively talented; she makes shoes by hand.
Vice: Why bespoke? Geogie Bee: Handmade traditional English shoemaking is a dying art. It's a costly, laborious process. Not many people make shoes here these days and at the price it costs to make them you might as well have them made to measure.
Do you wear your own shoes? Sometimes, but I feel it's like being a musician and listening to your own albums all the time. I prefer to wear shoes by someone else. My personal style varies but I like to channel Edie Bouvier-Beale and Iris Apfel.
How do you pay the rent? Accumulating crap, then selling it again. Shoes occasionally. I'll do anything legal to earn money, including body parts modelling! My bum is a particularly good earner. I only earn money doing stuff I enjoy, I don't see the point in doing anything you don't want to do! Even for money.
So were you a model? No, but someone told me I couldn't ever be one once and it pissed me off, so I went and did it and now there are over 400 good modelling pictures in my book, I don't like it when people tell me I can't do stuff.
Why did you become a designer? I just like creating things and if they happen to look nice or on trend or whatever, then I guess that's a bonus. I am constantly designing, or making something.
Art or commerce? I don't really care for fashion very much and I can't be bothered with seasons or trends because I really don't care that much, and I don't have the money. I think I actually really hate fashion people. Sorry fashion people. I actually would be in Bristol being a model-maker for animation, which is what I did before I came to London. If making shoes doesn't work out, I will probably go back there.
Tell us about your current preoccupations. I am obsessed with Blythe Dolls. I love their freaky big heads and big old eyeballs. I currently own three from the 70s and a few reproductions that I buy, customize and sell. If I sell one doll, I can pay the rent. It's a good money earner, even if it makes me one of those creepy dolly people.
