Some day I will have the results of my mountain studies in a form in which you all will be able to read and judge of them. In the mean time I write occasionally for the Overland Monthly, but neither these magazine articles nor my first book will form any finished part of the scientific contribution that I hope to make... The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly. - John Muir

Kimball Writes Stuff: Finn Appreciation Week Day 7.
Memories.
Finn opened his eyes to only white. Closing his eyes and opening them again didn’t help but he was beginning to hear sounds around him; the white must be a ceiling. Maybe if he sat up… pain shot through his back, a piercing aching but that was not what caused him to gasp. It was the pain it reminded him off, making all the memories rush back: Kylo Ren, Star Killer Base, Solo, the fight, Rey… Rey. Where was she, was she okay?
He sat up slowly. Everything was stiff especially his right shoulder. A wave of dizziness made him lie back down and close his eyes. He heard people, about two or three. No, two, one voice sounded non-human. All right, maybe they could explain what was going on.
“How are you feeling?” A female voice asked. Finn opened his eyes to look at her and answer… white coats. They were wearing white coats.
No.
Finn scurried to the other side of the bed while keeping his eyes on the white coats. His eyes scanned the room, looking for something to defend himself. The white coats gave themselves bewildered looks.
Good.
Finn searched the room again while they were distracted. Something caught his eye. Finn took the blaster from what seemed like it was supposed to be a hiding spot and aimed it at the white coats. Fear took confusion’s place.
Even better.
But they didn’t stop speaking softly, telling him that he was safe, that everything was okay.
Finn had only been reconditioned once but he remembered all of it, all the lies. He tightened his grip on the blaster.
A male human with skin darker than Finn’s spoke “Finn, it’s alright.”
Finn? Was this a new tactic?
“Look, I don’t want to hurt any of you. Just give me a stormtrooper suit, say I’ve been reconditioned and let me go.”
The white coats looked even more confused.
“What, no,” the non-human spoke this time, “This the resistance.”
“The resist – ouch.” Finn looked down to see a little tube with a needle poking out from his leg. Drowsiness submerged him and all became black.
Fin opened his eyes again… the white coats. Sheer panic engulfed and enveloped him.
Not again, not again, please not again
He got off the bed, could barely lift himself from the floor.
White coats
His stomach roiled and turned, his throat clenched and unclenched, trying to force what was not there.
Breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.
Finn
A voice he knew broke through everything.
“Finn, buddy, please look at me.”
Finn looked up.
Poe?
Poe!
He looked okay, healthy. Maybe Finn really was as safe as Poe was saying. But what if it was a trick?
Finn took a deep breath, and then another, “Not the First Order?”
“No, no, no,” Poe shook his head over and over. “This is the Resistance, you’re fine, you’re safe.”
Poe helped Finn get back on the bed and then he turned to one of the white coats. “Pass it.”
Finn flinched as Poe caught something brown. He opened up the brown thing and held it up.
It was Poe- no Finn’s- jacket. “I got it fixed for you. The First Order won’t do that.”
Finn nodded slowly.
I’m with the Resistance, I’m safe. He repeated to himself but any time he saw the white coats, his body reacted the opposite way. So he closed his eyes and followed their orders to relax, rest and when he was ready, to tell Poe to call them so they could check on him.
“Are they gone?” Finn said after a while.
“Who?”
“The white coats, the people wearing them.”
“Yes, why?”
“Um,” Finn opened his eyes, “the First Order reconditioners, they, they wore white coats.”
“Oh. Don’t worry; no one is ever going to recondition you.”
Finn nodded and slowly fell asleep. When he told Poe that the medics – that’s what Poe told him they were – could come in, they weren’t wearing their coats.
Time passed and Finn began trusting the medics. The exercises and other things they told him to do and take were helping after all. The female medic, who had light brown skin and hair that passed her waist was also a mind medic, a therapist. Finn was supposed to meet her five days a week so they could talk and help Finn’s mind get better.
Finn wanted to tell her about the past, before everything that had happened in that village but he really couldn’t remember. Well, he could, he could feel the memories but when he reached for them, he felt sick to his stomach.
Maybe that was wrong, maybe he should just try harder. Yet, the harder he tried, the worse he felt. He wanted to tell Poe but felt like that would burden the already busy pilot. A day came when he couldn’t take it anymore and broke down and told Poe about the gaps in his memory.
Poe hugged him.
“You have been through stuff that is in no way, you’re fault. When you can talk about them, I’ll be here. And so will your therapist. But in the meantime,” Poe smiled, “why don’t you make some better memories?”
So, Finn did just that. The best memories he made revolved around hugs. Finn loved getting hugged and for some reason, he got plenty of them. He got hugs from the sanitation workers when he gave them some tips and had lunch with them; he got a hug from one of the engineers after he passed the makeshift test on ships that she and her partner made for him; he even got a hug from the barber. His favourite hugs were the ones Poe’s friends gave him to thank Finn for rescuing Poe.
Well, they were his favourite until Rey came to visit and practically tackled Finn. Luckily, his back had healed. Rey, Poe and Finn finally got to all hang out together in relative peace and they stayed up late that night, laughing and exchanging stories. Rey had to leave the next day and Poe had a busy schedule but neither wanted to leave Finn’s room and they ended up falling asleep there.
As Finn watched his friends sleep, tears (the good kind) stung the back of his eyes and he felt, a very weird feeling, like his heart was swelling up inside. Finn closed his eyes and locked away the memory of that moment.
Full offense, but Finn Skywalker-Dameron is literally better than any and all real life white people, I have ever met, ever will meet and could ever possibly meet.
Things I got from the TLJ Trailer
- Helmet Maintenance is clearly not the next cool trend
-Someone, I don’t care if it’s rey, poe, or chewie, needs to give Sleeping Beauty the kiss of life and wake finn the hell up
-kylo is still terrible but his hair is pretty
Finn is so important because, in a world where we're still struggling to battle toxic masculinity, he is a guy who just loves SO OPENLY AND FREELY despite his life-long conditioning to be a destructive monster driven by hate. He easily has the biggest heart of any of the new people and he's with people who love him back and we need to celebrate him for the darling amazing wonderful burning ball of LOVE that he is
