The name, referring to a term invented by the controversial philosopher and accelerationist thinker Nick Land, questions the relation between the human and the non-human. Correlating to Freud‘s theory of trauma, consciousness can be seen as the protective barrier against stimuli from the external world and trauma is the result of invading this barrier. In the current situation, most obviously a virus can be seen as an invasion into our human system, which can cause traumatic effects that may be able to disrupt human society as a whole. Observing from a bigger scale, one could also see humanity itself invading earth as a form of “geotraumatic“ event, which is causing irreversible changes on the planet - relating to the era of the “anthropocene“.

By introducing a celestial view of a toxic invasion on a planet similar to earth and by sonically supporting it with a cold, industrial, almost cosmic sounding soundscape, which reminds one of destructive engines, the video shows the traumatic experience of our earth struggling with any form of crisis - being human or not-human caused.

Keywords such as global warming, financial crisis, refugee crisis and eventually corona crisis, are all around us. Will there be a future alternative - which may technological progress could provide - that can help us, as a human society overcome those crisis? Or will humanity with the final force to digitization cause even more crisis?

Negarestani recognizes the just alignment of Bataille's notion of the Solar Economy with Freud's speculative thesis concerning the nature of organic life: According to 'Beyond the Pleasure Principle,' the preservation of a lifeform in relation to the excessive energy source it draws upon, demands the sacrifice of a part of that lifeform: the creation of a mortified surface or crust — 'a special envelope or membrane resistant to stimuli' — that protects it from its exorbitant source of energy. Thus, the survival and the individuality of an organic lifeform, biological, psychic, or cultural, is based on the repression of an originary trauma in which it encountered, in all its naked power, the source of energy that would also be its death. Lifeforms are lagoons, repressed pockets of forgetting, temporarily protecting themselves against the outside that created them and will destroy them.
