I need lonely gerbil advice ;.;
so I have a single gerbil thats about 2years old (i’m not exactly sure) and i’ve tried to introduce her to another gerbil that I had before with no luck. I let them meet in a 10gal with new bedding and they fought. every time no matter what I did they just went at it so I eventually gave up and just let them stay separated. now a while back one of the gerbils passed away and I have more space available so I was wondering if I should get a younger gerbil from somewhere and try to introduce her to it?
I just don’t want her to be lonely/bored. she has a 55gal aquarium all to herself so she has lots to do and she seems decently active but I don’t hold her much because she has never really liked to be held and she bites if I hold her for more than a few minutes.
if I did get a second gerbil and it ended up not working out I could house it, I just wouldn't really want to deal with making room for another cage then I’d be caught back in the cycle of “well now what if this new gerbil is lonely should I get her a friend?” and then id have 3 gerbils and what if those two didnt get along??? so i’m kind of stuck and don’t know if I should get a second gerbil. having two in one cage would be fine but if i had to permanently house them separately it would become difficult.
id feel too bad to give the second gerbil back to wherever I got it from(maybe a rescue? are there gerbil rescues??) and like i said I CAN house it... it would just be a little stressful for me. so I guess what i’m really wondering is, how well do solitary gerbils do? especially since this one doesn't like handling i’m worried shes lonely or bored. would it be better for her if I gave a second gerbil a shot?
