It is native to northern Africa where it inhabits sandy deserts and semi-arid areas. It is common in the Nile Delta area, in the Nile Valley and around oases.

Distributed mainly in northern Mauritania in North Africa. It is also sometimes considered a subspecies of the Sudan gerbil.

Lesser Short-tailed Gerbil Gerbillus simoni

Found in northern Africa across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. It is also known as Simon's dipodil. This species occurs in rich steppe grassland vegetation and cultivated areas, especially arable cropland.
