Distributed mainly in northern Mauritania in North Africa. It is also sometimes considered a subspecies of the Sudan gerbil.

Found in northern Africa across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. It is also known as Simon's dipodil. This species occurs in rich steppe grassland vegetation and cultivated areas, especially arable cropland.
