Gerig is Verdigris's first mate and closest friend and ally. A large, strong man, he is gentle and considerate, and spends most nights on the ship playing the flute his father made for him. He would do anything for Verdigris or for her happiness.
When Gerig was young, his family was attacked by pirates and his parents were killed. He himself was only about 7, and this is when he was impressed into the life of a pirate. For 10 long years, he suffered their abuses and punishments, trying to protect any other kids on the ship. Then, one day, the pirates bit off more than they could chew; Gerig was rescued. Brought to stand before the King and Queen of Brevally, he awaited his punishment; surely he, too, would be hanged. Yet the Queen and King’s son, Addaelin, who was learning to dispense justice as he trained to be the next King, looked at him with kindness.
Instead of a noose, Gerig was added to the royal guard, and he was given a promise: work hard, prove yourself to us, and you will be a free man.
Saved thusly by the Prince, Gerig fell in love with him, and now, many years later, he journeys with the Princess to avenge Addaelin’s death. A pirate once more, he wishes there was another way, yet with his Captain at the helm, he knows that this is it. Verdigris has his undying love and loyalty, and he will follow her even unto his own death, if need be.
