Squidward stared into the camera, and for once in his life he really felt like he had to be strong. He could still make his old friends watch Spongebob Squarepants with him, after all -- he had the tape -- and at least he could make them do it without laughing. Squidward felt like maybe his life was moving in a new direction, and he'd have to make sure that these old friends saw that, and understood it.

Squidward didn't recognize this part of himself very well. Squidward wasn't the type to have friends, really -- he'd just like to show off to his new girlfriend, and then he'd watch Spongebob Squarepants with her, quietly, and then he'd cuddle. At this point, he wasn't even sure he was doing that anymore.

There was a knock on the door. He didn't even let his girlfriend answer it; she'd left for the day and he didn't want to have to hear what she'd say.

Squidward opened the door to see Spongebob smiling uncertainly. Squidward almost smiled. Squidward didn't want this!

"Oh, hi," Squidward said. "Is there something I can help you with, Spongebob?"

Spongebob blinked. He looked at Squidward, then at his feet. He looked like he was trying to remember what Squidward did here at this house. He wasn't doing a good job. "Well," Spongebob said, "I saw on TV that you have a new girlfriend, and that's why I came here and I was wondering if she's pretty. Um. She's really pretty."

It was pretty clear that the part of Spongebob that knew about Squidward's life was the one on display. Squidward made an effort not to sigh. "Don't worry. She's a girl, she's probably pretty, she likes you. See, I've talked to her, but I don't know what she's like so really I don't know. She can probably tell you more herself." He pointed to the stairs. He was still trying to figure out how to deal with this part. "She's upstairs with Patrick."

Spongebob nodded, and suddenly he seemed much more like a person who knew Squidward, and whose opinions on Spongebob Squarepants were going to count for something. (Even if he hadn't actually learned to like the show, yet.)

Squidward opened the door and Spongebob went in. Squidward watched Spongebob leave from his window. He went over to his desk. He picked up the remote and pressed Play.
