He won two New York Golden Gloves Championships, the 1973 160-lb Sub-Novice Championship and the 1976 Heavyweight Open Championship. Cooney defeated Larry Derrick to win the 1973 160-lb Sub-Novice title, and Earlous Tripp to win the 1976 Heavyweight Open title. #OnThisDay in 1981 undefeated heavyweight puncher Gerry Cooney ended the career of former heavyweight champion Ken Norton in one savage round at Madison Square Garden. Ironically, it was four years to the day that Norton himself dispatched Duane Bobick in similar fashion at the same venue. "We knew we had to be careful of Norton," said the 24-year-old Cooney's trainer Victor Valle. "We didn't want to happen to Gerry what happened to Bobick. So I told Gerry to get right to work. The faster you're out of the ring, the better it is." Norton was a philosophical loser: "I didn't expect Gerry to come out that quick. He hit harder than I thought he would and quicker than I thought he would. He's a very talented fighter."
