Poster 45, 2010. My dad was a huge fight fan so it always seemed as if boxing was on out TV every Friday and Saturday. I grew up watching Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Leonard. The middleweight division was the one to watch in the early 80’s. All that changed once Iron Mike busted down the door as a kid in the heavyweight division. He was as quick as the lighter weight classes but as powerful as the much bigger guys he was fighting. I don’t remember a more exciting fighter bursting on the scene with the impact that Mike had. When @galleries1988 held a sports-themed gallery show, I knew I had to pay tribute to my dad and my own love for boxing with a poster featuring Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas in their shocker that took place in Tokyo. It wasn’t Mike’s finest moment as the invincible was made to look mortal. But that’s sports. Those who we see as unbeatable superheroes also have bad days. They’re humans after all and a lot more relatable when they go through adversity. I merged the feel of a classic fight poster with the illustration style of manga, limiting the colors and going to town with speed lines. I also wanted it to have the feel of a Godzilla poster with these massive warriors in all their glory. This was a 24” by 36”, 3-color silkscreen. #posterdesign #miketyson #busterdouglas #boxing https://www.instagram.com/p/CbdSmG6vKGB/?utm_medium=tumblr
