i'm sorry, irish catholics are an ethnoreligious group now?? the religion that prostelytized & was forced upon irish people who already had our own pagan religions? i could not imagine being so blatantly wrong & riding the catholic boot so hard just to endear myself in some way to an oppression i cannot claim. especially cause the definition of an ethnoreligious group explicitly excludes religions like christianity / islam due to their stances on prostylization & history of forced conversions. once again, christians be christian-ing.
the conditional whiteness of jews is in no way the same to conditional whiteness of irish, who are actually ethnically white & always have been. even in my own subethnic group of irish travellers, while we are violently oppressed, we are white. we are not persecuted because of this aspect but an ethnic one, by settled irish i might remind op.
the genocide of the irish during the great hunger in no way measures up to the industrialized & just sheer voracity of the eradication of jews & roma in the shoah / porajmos. during the 10 years of the famine, 1 million died & over 3 million fled. horrific numbers but in no way comparable to the 6+ million dead jews in less than than half that time, with very few alive due to explicit calls for extermination. in the overall 30 years spanning the aspects of the great hunger & when population began to climb again, 30+ million jews would've been eradicated. that is what systemic eradication looks like.
when the irish fled, they gained proximity to whiteness. they became the facets of white supremacy in america that allowed for the oppression of non white minorities such as jews, indigenous & black people. this also ignores that the population of irish people post the great hunger has not only exceeded the previous population loss & estimation (8 million at the time) but done so tenfold as population estimates are now at 80 million worldwide.
jews are still pre shoah numbers. we were still getting viciously pogrommed, raped, murdered & abused while ireland was sending pities for hitler's death & maintaining neutrality throughout the shoah.
the only reason op hopes to endear jewish suffering to the historical persecution of the settled irish is because she takes issue with the fact ireland is held accountable for it's own antisemitism that is baked into it's society & that "leftists" take issue with the violent, ugly hypocrisy of irish society when it comes to jewish people so cries & hides behind hibernophobia accusations.
settled irish society are more than happy at the moment to invert, delegitimize & downplay the atrocities that jews have & still are facing. while shoving their own under the carpet. & then cry when it's brought up. we're just not falling for it anymore.
