There are 5 Northern White Rhinoceros' left in this world. What has our society come to? Differing from the elephants and their trunks being poached for ivory, rhino's are poached for their horns. Made of keratin, the same material as our nails and hair, these animals are being slaughtered. There are some people and cultures in this world that believe keratin has healing properties. I've provided a link to a video of a baby rhino (not stated the species of rhino) with an animal keeper seen snuggling and moving closer to the keeper. Eventually the young rhino lays down and puts his head on the keepers leg. Gertjie is now being taken care of at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa. Due to the loss of his mother for horrific reasons, the baby rhino is too afraid to sleep alone. If this doesn't make you just incredibly sad, you may need to have your level of compassion checked! While it can be hard to read and watch these horrible acts happen, also know that not all human beings are monsters. Some are informed and are doing good in this world. Regardless of the size of the action someone takes towards the greater good, it makes my heart swell with pride and I have a hard time breathing. I am overwhelmed with emotion when I see people doing good things. While I do believe "Ignorance is bliss," living life through such blinders can only hurt yourself. While it is incredibly devastating to see such images and immerse yourself with all this knowledge, it can also be beneficial. You are more than likely to promote what you are seeing so more are informed, you'll want to take action so such horrific events don't occur anymore. I saw this statistic recently and it blew my mind. One of the two species of African rhino, (the black rhino), population is down 97.6% since 1960. WHAT!!!!!! These creatures are no threat to humans. Why is this happening??
