from @hesc_endangeredspeciescentre - Last night, yet another very young rhino bull arrived. The tiny baby is approximately 2 weeks old. A field guide on one of our neighbouring properties noticed the baby being rejected by his mother, and she would repeatedly push him away as he tried to get close to her to suckle. We do not know what could have caused her to behave in this way. The young bull had no chance of survival without intervention, and was brought in to HESC for immediate and urgent care. We took acceptance of an exhausted, dehydrated and emaciated baby. We’re working hard to rehydrate him, and he’s responded well to bottle feeding. He urinated for the first time 15 hours after his arrival - always a good sign as it shows that he is stabilising. Lammie, mother-extraordinaire, was brought in this morning. The two haven’t been well acquainted yet, as the young rhino has spent most of the time sleeping. We are hoping for the best and will be sure to keep you posted.
