The Servant Leader – Becoming a “Solutionary” Part 1
What is a servant’s heart? To most people, the quintessential servant’s heart is – Mother Teresa and her team of sisters in blue-piped white saris *washing the feet of the poor and sickly in Calcutta, India. An important fact is that on a train ride in 1946, she answered the “call within the call” to give up her role as Principal of Saint…

How do you pick yourself up when you're feeling a lot of self-doubt? I feel like nobody believes in me or thinks I'm doing anything worthwhile sometimes, and it really hurts, and I don't know how to convince myself that it'll be okay.
I personally when I’m having bouts of self-doubt listen to inspirational music and people who I’ve admired in history. Everyone however is a little different. Think back to a time you were confident about yourself, what was then different than now? Can you grasp those feelings and lift yourself up?
Even if your answer is no, there is still hope anon. First things first, we are our own greatest critic. We can not escape our own self-examination and sometimes, we aren’t happy with what we see. If you keep beating yourself up calling yourself “lazy” and “a slob” you’re going to keep yourself feeling like what you call yourself. This can kill self-motivation. Try instead to use the same encouraging words you might use for a friend or loved one. Say it outloud if you must! Even if it sounds silly, it’s sometimes the first thing we can do to get things going again.
The problem we have when faced with doubt is that all too often we see the problem ahead as too big for ourselves and it could make one feel hopeless overwhelmed. If this is the feeling, step back from the whole thing and look at the small things you can control. Set small and manageable goals for yourself. Consider it like the following, you’re moving out and you have one month to do it. You have a garage and a bedroom full of your things but you know the place you’re moving too is much too small to take everything! This could overwhelm you and if you did feel that way, it’s okay! Its a perfectly normal response… But now let’s pull back and look at the details… Suddenly instead of seeing it as one big job and feel directionless to solve it we can start seeing the little things. Two rooms, work each room/area independently, organize things you know you want to keep, feel neutral about, and stuff you honestly can do without. You start with by working on the worst of the mess in the garage. You get it done in a few hours, task completed! Are you and still itching for more? You can always raise the bar if you’re feeling particularly motivated. Take note that if you feel highly overwhelmed while tackling your goal, chances are it’s too high and you need to lower it to something more realistic or specific.
Not to forget, look to all your tools you have. Look at what advantages that are there. What things do you have that will accomplish that goal? What about your friends and family? Can you reach them? Reach them anyways because having someone who loves and cares about you can help monitor and push you when you feel you’re falling behind. Even if it’s a single voice somewhere online it is still a voice cheering you on anon!
Speaking of voices online, listen here. I believe in you. I believe you can find the will to go out there again and accomplish whatever you put your mind too. It takes action and self-realization you do have a say in your life. You may have to do things that are uncomfortable and new, but don’t let fear stop you. Take a deep breath and take that step into the new and unfamiliar. Once there, look around at the change and acknowledge your own bravery for moving ahead. After all, If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re always going to get what you’ve always gotten. So make that change!
In the words of a man who greatly inspires me…

i reached the end of my street and the rain started to slowly trickle down from the sky. rather than turn around and head home, i pushed forward. the cool droplets were a pleasant reprieve. between the cool shade of the trees and the sweet relief of the rain, this morning’s run was a pleasant one.

Like walking a razor’s edge is the path to salvation, but life’s this web of lines. You want to help, but a smidgen one way you’re a trigger, another an enabler. The only thing any of us has control over is what we do at the given moment. That’s all we ever have really.
