Do you know what the Doctrine of Discovery is?
The Doctrine of Discovery was created in the 15th century and gave Christian explorers the right to claim lands they "discovered." Any land that was not inhabited by Christians was available to be "discovered", claimed, and exploited.
It still affects rulings in present day scattered through the 20th century and even into the 21st!!! 2005 is a shockingly short time ago for something as stupid as this to have been used to in a court to decide a property ruling.
I'm not sure what upsets me more: that this still is used today in American law or that most of America does not know it exists.
