Is it antisemitic to design a jewish character with naturally red hair? I tried looking it up on the internet, but couldn't find a clear answer. I know that one character in family guy who is a jew, who is portrayed as a walking, talking stereotype of every antisemitic believe in history, and he is a red head. I don't want to risk creating something that could potentially hurt a lot of people. I'm goyim, so I could really use the help of a jewish person who can help me figure this out.

Thanks for reaching out! It's great to see non-Jewish writers doing research and reaching out to Jews. That being said though, first of all: "goyim" is plural! The correct way to refer to yourself with this word is "I'm a goy".

Secondly, it's actually very easy not to write characters with antisemitic tropes: don't! If you know what the tropes are, then simply don't use them in your story.

A good rule of thumb is: if you find that your jewish character contains 2-3 antisemitic tropes, that's too many.

Examples:

-my Jewish character is the head of the bank in my fictional town, is selfish and greedy, and wants all the money for themself. Congratulations! You've written an antisemitic caricature!

-my Jewish character has red hair, a pointedly hooked nose, and murders christian children. Congratulations! You've written an antisemitic caricature!

-my Jewish character has red hair, and they are a teacher who goes on magical adventures and has a pet turtle and lots of friends they care about. Congratulations! You haven't written an antisemitic caricature, you've written a Jewish person with red hair! They exist! Red hair runs in my own family actually!

That being said, some tropes are more prominent than others, like if a jewish character was the president of a bank and was the only jewish character in the story, that would be a bit trope-y. Not necessarily antisemitic, but would certainly make me go "really?". Red hair is not a very common antisemitic character trait, and certainly the least recognizable IF present in the story independent from other antisemitic concepts.

Just make sure that you don't fall into the trap of depicting your jewish character with multiple known antisemitic traits.

TLDR: nah you're good. Just don't pile on any antisemitic tropes into your character.

I love your corrupted!sides au so much! Could you tell me more about them? Do yo7 have any headcanons about how they came to be? What are their relationships with the other sides like? How do they feel about themselves?

Okay so to be completely honest? I didn’t expect that much interest in the story, and kinda made it to be a one-off thing. But heck, I’ll tell you what I imagine, I guess :p

Okay so each side went to Deceit for the preexisting issues they display in the series (Logan hates feelings, Roman is insecure, Patton hates feeling bad, Virgil hates being ignored). I’d imagine the reason they went to Deceit of all people is 30% distrust of/not wanting to bother the others and 70% deceit of other dark sides sneakily encouraging them to do so. Deceit definitely shapeshifted a few times, and the overall goal was to isolate each side so they felt like they had to turn to the dark sides. And thus the plot of the animation happens.

After they’re corrupted, their relationships with each other does a nosedive. Part of what I wanted to imply in the animation is that they lost the friendship they had to gain their individual goals, all of which ended up being detrimental to themselves anyway. A lot of their progress would be erased, for example Virgil as Paranoia would become meaner and more desperate, trying to get the others to listen, and Roman as Pride would refuse as he’s done in the past. Patton as Naïveté would be repressing just about everything, and Logan as Apathy would ignore everyone’s feelings in favor of making sure Thomas does stuff his way. Overall, I think everyone would end up arguing a ton and make Thomas an indecisive mess.

As for how everyone feels about themselves, that varies. Roman likes how he now feels good about all his decisions, and is too prideful to see his mistake. Logan is empty, which caught him off guard a bit. He forgot that giving up emotions would also give up the happiness he feels (although perhaps doesn’t understand) from being around the others. He can’t really feel bad about anything, so instead he throws himself into his work. Patton would feel ashamed of needing Deceit’s help, but he pretty much repressed any bad feelings as soon as they come, so instead he gets distracted by puppies and old memories. Virgil is probably the most conscious of his fault. He only become more frantic and regretful of his decision when he changes to Paranoia. But now he’s too scared to do anything. However, he’s also the only one really able to put things back. So if I ever animate a follow up, it’ll probably feature Virgil as the one who fixes everyone. No promises on that, though.

So yeah! Hopefully you enjoyed that wall of text. Also, if anyone wants to write/draw/do whatever based on this plot, don’t let my personal takes stop you. I left a lot to the imagination on purpose. ❤️

I don’t know if you’ve ever brought this up here, but like…the implications of what acts of violence President Thawne must’ve shown Thad when he was still growing in the artificial womb to ‘toughen him up.’

I haven’t, but boy do I remember this. President Thawne was pretty off his rocker during these comics. 

This actually makes me wonder more about how President Thawne viewed Thad. I mean I know the comic highly suggests that Thad was just a tool to enact his revenge against the Allen family, but Thawne treats members of his family very differently. If we look at how he talks to Meloni his daughter, Bart his estranged hero grandson, and what Thad’s character implies about him then Thawne is pretty all over the place. 

Though really I assume he treated Thad more like an amenable blank slate who was willing to learn because Thad wanted to make Thawne proud of him. Thawne probably also used that pride to his advantage. I can imagine Thad took direction very well. Thad viewed himself a bearer of the Thawne legacy, so he was probably treated like such, but without the emotional attachments of family like Meloni would have. Thawne always has an upset and hurt tone when he talks about Meloni which shows that he cares about her in a more emotional way than Bart or Thad, so I think Thad lacks the actual emotion connected to a familial attachment.

As for Thad’s empathy he was just like an 11-13 kid at the time. It’s not like he’d be devoid of empathy or the ability to be empathetic.

Artemis is literally 22 years old and Halo is literally a 16 year old shipping them is creepy and wrong.

My point has literally only been that pushing their relationship as some weird adopted mother/daughter thing when, as you said, Artemis is only 22 and Halo is 16 is also real fuckin’ creepy. From the moment they appeared on screen together, there’s been this witch hunt of “Dont Ship Them Together!!!!!!!!” when like, I’m looking around, and no one’s really doing that. I haven’t seen a single person shipping them romantically. Besides that, we only just found out Halo’s age. If someone shipped them before that, leave them be. It’s a literal cartoon. If someone likes the idea of shipping them further down the line when they’re older and the age gap isn’t so big? Who fucking cares! It’s a cartoon! 

Yeah, 22 and 16 is personally too much for me for a romantic ship, but I’m gonna stay in my goddamn lane and not freak out over the possibility of other people doing it. Because it’s a cartoon. It really doesn’t matter. 

But all of this is irrelevant because I never said I ship them in the first place, like why are you here.

Oh god, I'm so sorry friend. Please, don't beat yourself up for grieving--you need to. And remember you gave her a safe, quiet place to rest, where she knew she was loved. You didn't fail her.

I feel so sorry for you. I know how you feel. I once had a guinea pig that died after five years. (which is a pretty long life for a guinea pig) Two years ago I found her dead in her cage. I think I cried for about two hours. We buried her in the yard. Take your time to mourn. I know it seems hard, but you will get through this. Some day you will be able to think about her again without feeling sad. You got this! ⚘
