Last year I hit a new low in life. I was in a scary car crash and lost my truck. I went out of a job. I went through a breakup. When it rains, it pours right? You might be able to imagine how lost I felt. How unstable. How alone. It's interesting to think now, a year later, how I managed to pull myself out of all that. It wasn't superhuman strength and instant mental grit that plucked me out of my misery. It certainly wasn't lightning bolts of inspiration, nor an immediate fire sparking in the belly, though I'd like to tell you it was, because those things would certainly be a lot more glamorous and interesting. The boring truth is, it was time. And patience. It was a willingness to face every moment of doubt and uncertainty, and to not rush that process, because that's probably the most important puzzle piece to any kind of self growth. In our instant-gratification world, we're primed to seek answers and to receive them right away. But when it comes to things like big life changes, or identity crises, or upheavals of any kind, I've learned we need to allow ourselves to be okay for not knowing jack squat for a while. To take a step back and just for a moment live outside of our own little microcosms. To self-care. Rely on friends, because that's what they're there for. Connect to the larger world through nature. And always, at the end of the day, trust yourself. You have the most valuable role to play in shaping how things come next, whatever they may be. For me, that's what #getdownriseup is all about. Now me and the folks at @burtongirls want to hear your story--they're running an amazing contest that will give women the opportunity to donate $5000 to the cause of their choice, courtesy of Burton, AND win a brand-new hardgoods set-up--season's just starting to warm up so you'll want that brand new shred stick!
