The parents sent their boy abroad for an exchange year so he could grow from the experience.

Nun der Junge ist gewaltig gewachsen, aber anders, als sich die Eltern das vorgestellt hatten.

Well, the boy did grow tremendously—just not in the way his parents had imagined.
