If you never forget, did it ever stop happening? Not every moment can be erased, not every one should. However, to lash yourself with whips of moments gone by is no way to live. Hell, it’s not even a way to die. Repeating the good, the bad, the ugly, until it hurts--or until you fool yourself into thinking it doesn’t--this is torment. Continuing the heartbreak of evils done, or mourning joy that has passed, it’s all the same. It’s the death of all that could be today. Letting “triggers” pull you this way or that, protesting ghosts of issues once very real, professing healing where there has been none, living in a past that would never have wanted to take your present or never should have been given the right...there are a million ways to kill yourself without dying. What if you decided to go ahead and die, only to yourself? You could leave the good and bad baggage alone for awhile or for always. You could give it no more power to drain from your life. You could die to the old hurts or joyful bits that somehow keep happiness at bay today. You could die to yourself and stop mourning that death. Off with the old and on to the new life that awaits, sitting there, with our Father, waiting around to be gracious to you. Sometimes, life can and will be hard--dying to yourself, too.
