Second. Of all. I made a drawing as a response to this question and I haven't had this much fun drawing in MONTHS

So let's just say that Dipper has a very scary conversation alone with a very angry shapeshifter, and luck just happens to be on his side!

Ok, but can we talk about how messed up and unprofessional/unscientific what actually happened to Shifty in canon was????

Let’s imagine a scenario where Shifty WAS just a wild animal/monster and not ‘sentient’.

Stanford Pines, field researcher, discovered an egg in the forest. Well, he didn’t just ‘discover’ it. The egg was buried in the center of the bottom of a small hill/dirt mound. HE DUG IT UP WITH A PICKAXE AND SHOVEL. He holds up the egg and it hatches. It turns out to be a NEW SPECIES he had never seen before, that had obvious anomalous abilities (it immediately shape-shifts into the nearest inanimate object.) Instead of observing the animal in its natural habitat to learn ANYTHING ABOUT ITS ACTUAL BEHAVIORS OR EVEN WHAT IT EATS, he takes it to an underground bunker where he keeps it in a cage half the time, interacts with it CONSTANTLY, and feeds it human food. He even teaches it tricks. He starts to consider it a pet. His study has been COMPLETELY compromised! He doesn’t even know if all of the anatomy he recorded is totally accurate because living in a basement eating beans and never seeing the sun when it wasn’t meant to grow up that way could very easily fuck with an animals’ development! And not only that, Ford’s planning on using this new, never before discovered specimen to TEST IF HIS CHYOCHAMBERS WORK. Could they not have tested the chryochambers on chickens and lizards and rabbits? Or even the eye bats or plaidypuses?? A species that there’s a LOT of around so if something goes wrong you didn’t just kill your one and only specimen??

Also, Ford considering Shifty a pet is so stupid. Again, he does field studies of animals most of the time. If shifty was just a wild animal, of COURSE it would eventually become agressive! Does Ford not understand how domestication works? Does he not understand the difference between ‘domesticated’ and ‘tamed’?? This is like people who raise monkeys in their house with them as pets and then act shocked when the chimpanzee they raised in their suburban mansion becomes an adult and acts agressive and hurts someone. For all Ford knew, Shifty WAS naturally as docile as he believed, and this attack of Fiddleford and attempt to get out was caused by mating instinct hormones or something. Ford doesn’t know, because he never unfreezes Shifty or attempts to find another shapeshifter!

Literally *everything* about how Ford and Fiddleford conducted research on Shifty was wrong. And don’t say ‘oh it was the 80s’ because Ford didn’t do that shit to any other species he found! The ones he DID capture and jar were all part of species that Ford KNEW there large populations of locally, while ALSO observing them in their natural environment. He mainly went after adult healthy specimen too! Ford should have known better. Hell, even Fiddleford should have known better! I genuinely don’t know what either of them were thinking.

I think in this case its one of those things that don't translate well from the cartoon world to the real one.

Because you're absolutely correct. Every aspect of how Shifty was treated is horrible. Ford should have known better, he made so many mistakes he shouldn't have with both keeping Shifty in captivity, and raising him as a pet. None of his other specimen were treated the same, and even if he wasn't sentient, depriving him of sunlight or a chance to exist in his (as far as we know) natural environment is a crime.

But Gravity Falls is also a cartoon, and the writers wanted to give the episode some kind of horror monster. I don't know ifs its just one of those things they didn't think too hard about, or if its a reflection of how far Ford got caught up in the portal and Bill that he put aside how he should have handled Shifty in favor of how he wanted to (as a specimen for observation vs a cool pet). While we are given a good amount of details about what happened through Fords journal, we aren't given the whole picture or a lot of details from that time. Its not behavior we see from him before or after (as far as I know, I'm not a hard core Gravity Falls loreist so I can't say for sure), and its not really said why he acted like that in the first place.

Was it fear? Did Fiddlefords anxieties about a shapeshifting monster get to him? Did Bill have a part to play? Did Shifty? How much do we know about his species? Is it possible Shifty was affecting Fords behavior in ways we don't know? He's an alien baby, it could be some kind of 'maternal instinct' brain wave gone wrong. Was it the writers making a plot but either not thinking about how it'd make Ford look like or not having the details figured out on who Ford would be?

I don't know. Fun to think about though.

At first I was thinking about the RGB-ness of it all - aka Stan as Ranboo, Ford as Sneeg, Fiddleford as Slime - BUT I think we could have more fun if we shuffle them around a little bit

The Founder is Obviously Bill, and Hetch is Silas Birchtree. The Puzzler is Pyramid Steve.

Instead of the TV monster, there's one or more of the henchmaniacs running around.

The Showfall drones are Eyebats but like, object head eyebats. Eyebats with a nice suit underneath. (And potentially they can just... Drop the bodies whenever they want and keep flying on and then swarm? That would make the hallway and button scenes Really Fucking Cool)

The Ghouls are Blind Eye cultists? FUCK I just wrote out a whole thing and accidentally deleted it all hold on

Like, I know I said Fiddleford was Sneeg and not Charlie but I'm really struggling to not see episode one as Heavily memory gun-ed Fidds snapping, kidnapping Stan and trying to make Ford shut down the portal for good.

Sneeg Getting Slimed = Stan getting shot with the memory gun, then in the fight at the end Ford manages to turn things around and hits Fidds with it, they have a Toot Toot McBumbersnazzle moment and then he pockets it a la the Slime Rag.

Also the Create-a-Creature is absolutely Shifty. Maybe Fidds was also "training" him with the gun and now he doesn't remember anything well enough to shift into it fully. Hence Shark-ickle-ster.

Wow, these sure are words that I'm typing. Also Holy Shit this is long

the Rats are hypnotized people? Or like, possessed by Steve? Idk

I also don't know who's on the roundabout, but it could be a potentially funny bit to have Tad Strange as Austin. Tyler could be a good Ethan? But then, when is this actually happening because with (somewhat) canon ages the best we can do is the main trio would at like, forty-ish and Tyler would be technically-a-teenager still. Would they want the stars of their show to be that old?

Or we could just say fuck canon ages because we know Showfall can brutally kill and then revive people at least three times in the span of a week, surely age freezing/manipulation is a step down from that.

Also instead of the Hero having the mindset of "oh my god I can't do this. Why me? Can't I leave and go find someone more capable or something?" Is more like "I have to do this, I've been chosen, I'm the only one who can take this operation down" because of course he is lmao. Also Bill Hetch-tree is absolutely playing into that and making it 10× worse, as he does.

It kinda sucks being a non-fandom blog when you have concepts and ideas for a fandom but don't really feel like you can share em here.

Anyway fuck it, headcanon: Shifty from Gravity Falls is still in their larval form, and is essentially the alien equivalent of a cuckoo wasp/changeling. They're misshapen from an accelerated development due to increased environmental stressors (being kept in a cage and fed only beans wtf), an evolutionary response to edge out a host species' juveniles and steal their resources in times of scarcity. If raised in ideal conditions they would have aged more slowly and evenly, eventually pupating and hatching into something tougher than a steamed dumpling. I'm still partial to something cuckoo-wasp-esque because of all the iridescent jewel tones of their exoskeletons and Shifty deserves to be shiny. Send tweet.
