Hope you enjoyed Valentine’s Day
I wish I hyperfixated in what other people hyperfixate on. But alas! Here's an eyeball in these trying times
Some crazy feats of Kitaro because damn, that's one resilient boy:
+ Crawled out of his mother's grave (manga chapter 1, Hakaba episode 1).
+ Defeated a blood sucking yokai by draining its blood in return (vol 9 chapter 84). Similar feat: 2018 ep 45, but replace blood with energy.
+ Poisoned, tied up, dangling down a well. Proceed to gather all the poison into one arm, then climbed back up using the other (2007 episode 18).
+ Mixed blood with electricity to stun the blood sucker (2007 episode 21).
+ Overpower a yokai wielding the Thunder Stone with his own electricity (2007 episode 57).
+ Lure a liquid yokai to enter his body then buried himself in snow to and froze said yokai solid (vol 4 chapter 7).
+ Eaten alive, casually escaped through the pores and reformed (vol 9 chapter 91).
+ Made a freezing finger gun by inhaling all the cold air from a fire extinguisher (2018 episode 64).
To do list:
Kick the bucket
Have a ball
Dance the yokai jig
JUST KISS ALREADY!!!!!!
Kitaro who gets stuck in trees somehow.
Your post about feeling awkward starting 2018 after watching Hakaba is very relatable considering that very version of Kitaro is its own thing, separated from others. Yes, the core premise about a yokai boy helping human is the same, but the rest (the setting, his personality, whether they mention his birth and Mizuki etc) always seems to fluctuate. As such, if one version interests you, you can just go in blind without prior knowledge and won't miss much. On the other hand, it is also quite detrimental for newcomers who isn't aware of this. For example, new fans from GeGeGe no Nazo may be a little disappoint they won't get to see Mizuki that much aside from Hakaba Kitaro. Even then that series depicted relationship with Kitaro in a less than ideal, not that loving way. When I started the 2007 anime, it feels pretty jarring seeing how light-hearted it is and a how much better this Kitaro's social life is has compared to Hakaba and 2018. Hakaba in turn is very weird to watch, faithful to the early manga it maybe, but anyone familiar with the modern Kitaro who is a powerful fighter, a hero fighting for human and yokai alike will be put off by how despicable Hakaba boy is in comparison. In the end, it is not a bad thing, it just means it'll take some time to get used the new settings and when you do it become quite fun to compare all the different versions.
Ps: sorry for the long write, it was just very exciting to find somewhere I can talk about Kitaro.
Don’t worry! I’m also glad to talk about Kitaro!! Honestly coming from a different fandom where all their versions (manga anime and live action) were different from one another I don’t really mind it! It gives you a feel of ‘oh hey more content’ and like there isn’t just ‘one canon’ to choose from.
While I do admit Mizuki was the one who pulled me into the fandom (via endless fan art of him through gggnn) I did after all stay for Kitaro! And since my first official watch through was hakaba i guess the feel threw me off when I jumped straight to 2018. But he’s very cute! I’m glad I was convinced to watch it!
