Hello! I have been asking ao3 authors how they joined ao3!

So how did you join ao3 and who else should I ask?

Oh uh! Good question! If you mean "how" more literally, when I joined they were doing the ticket system [which I believe they're still doing?] where you get on a waiting list to be let in, except I didn't hear back in the 1 week time period I had to put in a second ticket and wait again. I remember it was just inconvenient enough that I almost didn't join.

For the more "why" aspect, I had just started posting on fanfiction.net, and found i didn't like their policies, and their tendency to just scrub content they didn't like, even if I wasn't the one writing that specific content. Asking around I found out about AO3 and sent in my ticket. I had just started writing fanfic for the first time [2015ish] and was looking for a good home to put it in.

AO3 fit!

As for recommendations on who to ask next, I will recommend @theminecraftbee and @redwinterroses !

Hi! Thanks for the ask!!

It took me a while to remember, but I'm pretty sure the first time I visited ao3 was for a Miraculous Ladybug fic back in 2017 or so (when duty and desire meet - fair warning, it hasn't updated in a few years, but it's so good guys). I came across one of the illustrations for it on Pinterest and followed it to the fic and was immediately obsessed. I hung out in the MLB tag off and on for a bit, but only occasionally - I didn't even make an account at the time, just manually checked back every few months to see if WDADM had updated.

I came back to ao3 a couple years later on a quest for Zutara fics. I think this is when I finally made an account, but it was still under the username I used for a lot of my social media back then 😅 so any of my irl friends could have immediately recognized it as me.

I started getting into hermitfic in 2023 or maybe early 2024 - I've been watching Hermitcraft since season 5, but wasn't in the fandom/fanlore side of things until recently. When I started getting into hermitfics was when I changed my username to purple-nightfall.

How or why did you join ao3 and who else should I ask?

hiya!! very honored to be recommended by daniofcrows!! i may or may not be entirely obsessed with one of their works currently heh-

But i guess i joined because when reading fanfic, it has the best tagging system and no ads so its really the best one for that. and then over time i was like- well i can cross post from wattled since more people might find it with the tagging system here, and now i find it just easier to post there! wattpad doesn't save italics and other changes like that when i copy paste it, so posting chapters is a bit more of a hassle over there. (i still do post some books exclusively over there though!) also posting one shots is better on ao3, because Wattpad wants a cover photo per book, which i don't really want to do for every one shot. i will say, i prefer the commenting system on wattpad, being able to comment on each line, so i probably won't stop posting my other books over there and just cross posting them to ao3. I guess i like both of them for different reasons, so i joined ao3 for the tagging system wattpad was lacking and now post on both, and mostly only read on ao3.
