When John gets kidnapped, Sherlock is unable to get to him in time to stop him from being murdered by his spell-casting captor. Even though all seems lost, Sherlock's view of the world is flipped upside down when John's ghost shows up in the flat. The supernatural is real.
It doesn't stop there; it turns out the spell the cast allows only her to bring John back. But she'll only do it if Sherlock investigates several odd serial murders that have occurred in the supernatural community. Most Ghosts Are Idiots : The one where Sherlock is already dead but hits it off with John anyway. John returns from Afghanistan later than he did in canon and rents a long vacant flat in Baker Street. But it has a few problems, he discovers, such as the ghost of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock throws books about, plays the violin at all hours, and leaves ominous messages on the bathroom mirror. John settles in regardless, determined not to let a haunted flat get the best of him. Though he does wish Sherlock would stop hiding his cane. Sherlock’s not an ordinary ghost, but then, most ghosts are idiots.
Bring Me a Dream : Sherlock’s dead, technically. Genius he may well be, but immortal he isn’t, and it’s a long way down from the rooftop of Bart’s to the hard pavement below. After the fall, Sherlock, through some unknown magic, becomes a sandman. He crafts dreams for John and tries to find his way back home.
The Shadowman : Sherlock is a shadow, melting into the dark and consuming souls. Then John came along, human and so very bright.
