Handmade Polymer Clay Ghost Cicada
Some health issues caused Kathy and me to cut short our travels this year and return to Marshalltown. Once summer ends and the days start to get shorter, most of the interesting flora and fauna begin to disappear. So I am going back through my “possibles” file pulling interesting images that I didn’t post because there were too many other interesting images to post from those days. Hopefully we will be back to more interesting places in the new year. Ghost Cicada - May 2024 All cicadas (often incorrectly called locusts) are white when the first emerge from the hardened nymph shell. The exceptions are the eyes, which are red, and the hard plates, which are black. Those black plates are what enable the soft nymph to burst forth from its shell. This particular cicada had just emerged from its shell. The wings have not yet filled out to full size and none of its body has yet hardened to its adult shell. If you want to see these white cicadas, you have to be patient… and fast. They only remain white for twenty minutes to a half-hour. MWM
