DannyMay 2025 Day 2: 1990s

Decided to do a 90s colored redraw of all the big weapons/tools of the show!

I sometimes think about the Ghost Gabber suddenly vanishing and two days later, Danny, in ghost form, manages to sneak up on Maddie and manages to convince her to not shoot because he wants to give her something. That something being the ghost gabber. When she asks why he had it, Phantom just smiles at her and goes “I fixed it for you!” and goes on to explain that it wasn’t actually translating ghost speak at all, so he did his best to fix that issue.

As a little bonus, maybe he tries to explain that ghost speak is a language that can’t easily be translated to a living language or understood by anything without a core, so in his words, it sometimes might not make sense but is still the best translator aside from himself.

When asked why, he just shrugs and goes “It’s crazy, but I actually had enough spare time to get bored, and this was a fun little challenge to pass the time”, but he says it in ghost speak to show her that it actually works this time. Then he vanishes.

Dannymay Day 29: Ghost Speak AU

Ghost Gabber in 3D:

I'm kinda confused about the AU part of this prompt. I thought ghost speak is canon? Otherwise this gadget or the Fenton Phones wouldn't exist in the show.

And then there is the episode "Pirate Radio" with the music and the subliminal message that only affected the adults(and Jazz).

Maddie finally gets a clean audio sample of Phantom talking to himself, the Ghost Gabber 2.0 does it's job a little too well.

Sometimes, when Phantom thought no one was listening, and that he was really truly alone, he would speak.

Times like now, when Phantom finally decided he must have flown too far to be followed, that he'd shaken her off the scent. Times after a battle between the two of them, or three of them, he did this when Jack fought too. Rarely he would do it after fights with other ghosts. But here, now, it was just the two of them, Maddie crouched, a shadow in the bushes, and Phantom in the center of the clearing, exposed and vulnerable. 

Sometimes, he would speak and his voice would sound like radio static. It would wax and wane, intonation and expression all intact. It would rise in pitch and twist and screech and scrape horribly against human ears. And then, it would dip and mellow and apologize its way into comforting white noise. Other times- bad times - it would increase in intensity, the humming buzzing electricity of it becoming too loud, the pressure shift oppressive and suffocatingly heavy against her eardrums. And just as soon as it came, it was gone again. Phantom would freeze like he knew someone was eavesdropping and he would vanish.

 That didn't matter though. They would cross paths again. What mattered is that she finally, finally,  managed to catch a fresh clip of ghost speak on the Ghost Gabber 2.0™. 

The little machine seemed to think for a moment before spitting out a translation, stilted and robotic through the speakers.

[I am a ghost. 

AAAAAAAHH! FUCK. FUCK, WE CAN’T KEEP- AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH. I JUST, I- WHY? WHY? WHY! STOP! We need to, we should be - fuck! Stop, breathe, it’s okay, it’s fine. No one got hurt, it’s okay, breathe. Breathe. It was close. It was too close, she was too close, I- I could have hurt her. I have hurt her. I’m just hurting her everyday, doing this, I’m hurting her! What is wrong with me? Why? Why- can I just be normal? How- how? HOW? WHEN DOES THIS END HOW DO I STOP WHY AM I SO STUPID I CAN’T- I CAN’T! I- SHE- shit.

Fear me.]

The recording stops, and asks if she would like to hear it again. She hits replay, once, twice, too many times in the quiet of the clearing.  

Maddie sits, stunned, silent, struggling to process what she’s just heard. That was not even remotely in the realm of what she’d expected. And yet, she could feel it, the truth in the words, the accuracy of the translation, the pain and self-loathing that made up Phantom’s being. 

The desire to move on. 

She could feel it, and maybe, just maybe, he could too.

DC Prompt- The Ghost Gabber

When Danny heard his parents made a device that interprets the “language of ghosts,” Danny thought they made a device that could translate dead languages to English, or something.

He didn’t realize they had invented something that could pick up on communications from a ghost’s core.

He really didn’t expect the thing to start spewing his thoughts to the world.
