Frans Lanting, Ghost Trees
This is not a painting, but a photograph of trees with sand dunes in the background.
Ever since encountering the ghost trees of Namibia in a photograph exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, I was mesmerized by this enchanting landscape. I couldn't believe these were unretouched photographs. I am still lost in them and found myself starting at them, completely lost in their beauty and desolation. Their explanation is such: (per SLATE.com) Among the towering red dunes of Namib-Naukluft National Park in the central Namib Desert is an area known as Sossusvlei. It is a strange and alien landscape. The rich red dunes that surround the area owe their hue to age -- over thousands of years, the sand has literally rusted.
