Tonight as part of this year’s Spooky Season Watch Marathon I watched BBC’s Ghost Watch from 1992. This movie first came to my attention because Daniel from the Cobwebs channel mentioned that it was his scariest movie of all time. Coming from one of the most knowledgeable horror fans of the internet that’s a big claim.
I think Ghost Watch would’ve caught my attention either way eventually because I’m fascinated by films with big impacts & especially if there’s controversy. If you don’t know, the history of this movie is super interesting: Ghost Watch was made with actual BBC news broadcasters as the actors & presented as a real live broadcast in 1992 on Halloween night. While the Blair Witch Project in 1999 presented itself as real & went so far as creating false stories about missing people & caused a lot of US filmgoers to believe it was real, I’ve never read about much outrage over it. Apparently people in Britain are a lot more uptight because supposedly there was mass panic & very real outrage over this film presenting itself as real live television.
Okay, I’m sort of poking fun but in actuality I CAN imagine how this film could really scare a viewer in ‘92 who believed it to be a real live broadcast. I found the film scary & I knew it was just a movie. I guess my love of Halloween mischief & scares means it’s sort of beyond me why that would make someone angry instead of impressed but I digress.
Onto my actual verdict on the movie: I loved Ghost Watch. I’m not sure yet if I agree with Daniel that it’s my scariest of all time just because I’ve seen a lot of horror movies & I can’t exactly come up with a 100% accurate takeaway of any piece of media as soon as I consume it. I need to let things resonate. I need to think about it before I make a dramatic statement like that.
That said - honestly…. It might be. It is at least for sure one of the scariest paranormal movies I’ve seen. It’s DEFINITELY the scariest movie I’ve seen this year & by far the scariest of this season’s spooky season watch marathon. As an immediate takeaway as of right now fresh from watching - I’d put this movie up there with Lake Mungo from 2001 from Australia & the Mexican American movie The Old Ways from 2020 as some of the extremely rare paranormal films to genuinely get under my skin.
There are plenty of paranormal films that creep me out while I’m watching & that stand out for technical quality or memorable stories or imagery or acting or any number of reasons that don’t get under my skin & fill me with a creeping dread the way Ghost Watch did. A part of it was the way the film really did feel real. It did it in a way that most found footage or documentary style films ultimately fail because of a desire to go bigger giving themselves away as obvious fictional movies. The way this movie was presented & the way everyone acted had me genuinely questioning at times if maybe it was real & I literally knew it wasn’t!
The story itself & the slow unraveling as well as the characters & pacing just led to some moments that were genuinely chilling. There were a few scenes of this movie that truly made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I know everyone is scared by different things & this movie didn’t have a single jump scare, there was no gore & you don’t actually see any ghosts so if those are the things that get you, this one might not scare you. For me personally this was the exact type of slow-burn thriller that had me genuinely unnerved in a way that is extremely rare for me. And the dialogue & characters kept it engaging the whole time so I just want to be clear that while it’s not exactly “action packed” this movie is never boring! Just wanted to clear that up because I know when I see “slow-burn” I’ll totally admit I read “boring” sometimes & that’s not what I mean lol!
Anyway - Ghost Watch 1992: really really good. Very scary. Not sure if I’ll be sleeping with the lights out tonight tbh. This is the type of movie that gives me the sensation of being watched, or that something is lurking in every shadow 😱

Ghostwatch has a complicated, controversial, and tragic legacy, which is a shame for all the obvious reasons but, also, because it kicks ass. I’ll take this splendid mockumentary over Conjuring 2 any day.
