Weekday nights were always the worst. One or two people would pop in to look for a movie, but most of the people who passed through the doors of Family Video were just returning the tapes they had checked out. In a town like Hawkins he didn’t expect a small store to be absolutely packed, but apparently very few people had time to spare after dark during the working week. Some days he could actually nap and not miss a single thing, but if Keith were to put in a rare, nighttime appearance Steve would be royally screwed. The guy hated him as it was--no point in being needlessly antagonizing.
A yawn, unable to be suppressed, crept out of him as he stared at the clock, willing time to move faster so that he could finally just go home and sleep. His shifts had been a bit irregular as of late, and he suspected it had something to do with his inability to rattle off boring movie details. So what if he didn’t watch everything in there? Was having mainstream taste really that bad? Popular movies were popular for a reason--it wasn’t his fault that he wasn’t a film snob. Although it wouldn’t be the worst idea to start picking up a couple new titles every now and then. It wasn’t like he had a buzzing social life...
Growing more restless with each passing moment, Steve finally grabbed a stack of tapes from the RETURN bin and began flipping through them, settling on a case displaying a familiar horror icon. After all the shit he had seen he wondered if watching something full of blood, screaming and death was a good idea, but to be fair he had always liked horror movies. They were objectively better with a cute girl sitting at your side, but the story lines always made him feel like he was right there with the characters. He could empathize with the final girl, fighting for her life, struggling just to draw another breath. Too bad he was too altruistic to ever be that character.
With a sigh he dropped the tape back into the stack, glancing back at the clock in the vain hope that an hour had passed. “I should just stick to comedies instead.”
