This likely comes from Horikoshi having absolutely horrific writing when it comes to bullying and abuse. Things like harassment (cough mineta trying to sexually assault all the girls) and physical violence (cough bakugou attacking izuku. cough everytime monoma gets attacked. cough everytime bakugou hits kirishima) gets played for laughs. His refusal to take these things seriously has lead the fans to think that abuse is just something funny and it's not serious WHEN IT IS. There's nothing wrong with favoring a character when you're writing but you can't play all their horrific actions off as "just a cheap gag" to avoid having to give them consequences and reproductions.
