Ghoulcrest is a ghost town, quite literally. The island it resides on is almost entirely inhabited by ghost and dark types. During the day the island seemingly becomes abandoned as the nocturnal Pokémon sleep. The Pokémon who live and come from Ghoulcrest are well versed believers in all things occult. Lethe lake contains a large whirlpool in the center of it, no one really knows how the whirlpool keeps spinning but its always been a constant in the body of water. Legend says the lake leads to the underworld and all souls go there when its their time to leave this world.
Ghoulcrest traditions/legends
Ghost and dark types while seeming to be evil or undead by humans, are simply Pokémon more connected to the veil of the supernatural. Dark types channeling shadows and the occult, ghost types walking the veil between living and dead, these types alone are able to directly interact with those beyond. Every full moon the Pokémon of the town gather by Lethe Lake for a ritual. The full moon is believed to be one of the points in which the veil between the overworld and the underworld is the thinnest. Pokémon from the town will go to the lake bringing gifts and food for loved ones who have passed on, throwing them to the whirlpool. Its a quieter more reserved personal tradition, not all of the townsfolk do it every full moon, instead only partaking once a year on the proper festival.
Once a year the full moon hovers directly over the lake, this day is believed to be the veil between worlds is truly the thinnest, and thus is the day the town throws a festival to honor those who have passed on. Everyone brings gifts and offerings and food for their loved ones, throwing them to the whirlpool. Pokémon come from all over the isles to partake in the festival, whether they believe or not, they're welcome as long as they're respectful. Ghost type Pokémon with their connection to the veil, and Dark types with their link to the shadows and occult are able to view and speak with those visiting from the underworld on this night, its possible on normal full moons as well but takes a great amount of power. Though, because only ghost or dark types can interact with them, a lot of Pokémon don't believe the legends are real, that its all the work of Ghost and Dark types playing tricks. Despite this, Ghost and Dark types act as guides during the ceremony, those of the town without loved ones to visit help non ghost types visiting the town for the festival speak to those that have passed on.
The Pokémon from Ghoulcrest tend not to take very kindly to people making jokes about the dead, especially those who care enough to visit their loved ones every full moon, even if they cant see them. There are legends of some who with enough faith and connection to someone who has passed that they managed to use their bond to speak to those lost even without the ghost typing.
