Super fun commission I did of Batman with his giant penny :)
“The Forgotten Shadow of the Bat in the 1980s” - 1982: “Shadow Play”: Debuting in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 28 in June 1939, Wayne Manor is the home of Bruce Wayne and, while evolving in location, size and content over the decades, the famous Batcave, ‘home’ for Batman. 30 years later, after the first Robin, Dick Grayson, goes off to Hudson University in Frank Robbin’ “One Bullet Too Many!” in Batman (Vol 1) 217 in late 1969, it was decided that Bruce and Alfred Pennyworth would move out of Wayne Manor (too big for just the two of them) and live in the penthouse above the Wayne Foundation and has his laboratory and special cars and vehicles such as the Batmobile below the foundation. In June 1982, in Gerry Conway’s “Shadow Play” in Batman (Vol 1) 348 (cover by Jim Aparo), one of the few times in the mythos, we see the ordinary activity of Bruce, Grayson and Alfred moving in the large extraordinary trophies into the Batcave, such as the Giant Penny (panels presented by Gene Colan, Klaus Janson, Adrienne Roy and Ben Oda). The story revolves around Francine Langstom and her daughter Rebecca who blame Bruce Wayne for her husband and father, Kirk Langstrom, for not finding a cure for being Man-Bat (debuting in Robbins’ Detective Comics 400), so Bruce as Batman goes about Gotham, taking trying to hunt down Man-Bat and give him the possible anecdote, but Robin and Alfred learn Man-Bat’s hideout has been the abandoned Batcave. In the end Batman and Man-Bat fight in the Batcave and, using Rebecca as a distraction, Batman gives Man-Bat the anecdote and Kirk returns back to normal. The issue ends with the 'complaint’ that the move back into Wayne Manor and the Batcave was more turbulent than expected, but normalcies within the Bat-world isn’t why these tales are so memorable. ✌🏼💙📖🎨🦇
