Gibbaeum velutinum. February 2022.
Gibbaeum dispar
Most of the species in Gibbaeum (in the Ice Plant Family, Aizoaceae) come from the Little Karoo, an arid region east of Cape Town in South Africa. Gibbaeum dispar has a small range in the central Little Karoo, and it is notable for the velvety texture of its leaves, as well as its beautiful lavender-purple flowers.

Gibbaeum pilosulum Hondewater, wispy hairs on Hershey kiss body (MG1514.62)
A large clump of Gibbaeum nebrownii at the SF Succulent and Cactus Society November meeting.
Russell Wagner brought several impressive specimens that helped illustrate his talk on small mesembs. As mesembs, Gibbaeum are related to Lithops and other “living stones”, and are highly adapted to extreme conditions in the South African desert. This species is notable for its unusual sheen. The label says 2005, making it at least 12 years old. I’m not sure if that is the age of the plant or when he potted it in this container.
13th January 2017: Mesembs, all sown late November 2016 in a mix of sharp sand and coco coir, currently growing under a fluorescent light. Delosperma bosseranum, Gibbaeum shandii, Gibbaeum velutinum, Conophytum minutum, Conophytum uviforme, Rhinephyllum muirii, Cheiridopsis peculiaris, Cheiridopsis pillansii, Cheiridopsis denticulata.
