I just watched Yêu, which is a sapphic Vietnamese movie. I’ve been searching for a vietnamese wlw movies for so long. Most of them are korean or chinese, of course there’s nothing wrong with that. However, as someone who is vietnamese, it warms my heart to see wlw love set in vietnam. its one thing to create a lgbt movie featuring a mainly white cast, another for them to be asian, and another for them to be the same nationality as you. this is what people mean when representation matters. seeing yourself within the characters is incredibly warming and reassuring to know that lgbt issues spread beyond the western hemisphere. the lgbt community is meant to be inclusive among all identities and races, despite those who invalidate others’ identities (yall still valid ily EDIT: I MEAN YALL AS IN THE PEOPLE WHO ARE INVALIDATED BY THESE ASSHOLES. THOSE TO INVALIDATE OTHERS ARE INVALID).
Being vietnamese and a lesbian is something im probably gonna struggle with for the rest of my life because i know that there’s a whole country where majority of the denizens don’t approve of my love. i only know the slang of the word gay in vietnamese and that word still sends chills down my spine. the connotation is horrible and the words are just filled with hatred. there is still a large taboo for lgbt couples in vietnam in comparison to other asian countries. honestly just watching this movie makes me feel hopeful for the future. like theres a possibility that i wont be hated by my traditional family and culture (unlikely, but a girl can hope lol). i just wow the actresses were so pretty and handsome and there was a good mix of humor (thanks to mien). and yeah im gay and thats my story. I love this movie sm.
