Gill Hicks lost part of both legs in the London bombings of 2005

Hicks was the last living victim rescued. Both her legs were amputated below the knee, and her injuries were so severe that she was initially not expected to live. She was admitted to hospital without a name, identified only as ‘One Unknown’ Hicks compartmentalises LifeNo1 and LifeNo2

Timing… Late for work that day, the first time ever, after having argued the night before with partner, she would have ordinarily been in the office by 7.30 and wouldn’t have been on the tube at that time any other day. The bomb went off at around 10 to 9.

Hicks separated a couple of years later. However, there’s a happy ending… In 2011 she met industrial designer Karl Falzon and returned to live in Australia, where she gave birth to her daughter.

I don’t normally enjoy the speeches given by our guest speakers at my schools annual speech night, but this year we had Gill Hicks, and tbh i think shes given me a new outlook on life. she explained what unconditional love was for her when she was a victim of the London bombings in 2005 and how she survived, but i think what most got me was how society drops whatever thoughts they have about people to show love in a time of need, 

I’m going to show more love
