WHAT I ATE WEDNESDAY
It’s Wednesday and I’m in a food coma. Full on can’t move, can’t inhale too deeply, wearing only a giant tee shirt and my underwear kind of full. AND I LOVE IT! My sweet boy Ben and I went to have fancy dinner night because we made it halfway through the week and if that’s not cause for celebration nothing is. Location? “Gilt Bar” in downtown Chicago, right off the Merchandise Mart where there’s a frickton of amazing restaurants all clustered around that four block radius. From sushi to speakeasies it’s a kickass hotspot for Chicago (food) nightlife- which is why we chose this incredibly dim-lit and incredibly-well executed 1930′s portal to foodgasm. Starting off with the best garlic-and-parmasean roasted brussels sprouts I’ve ever had, accompanied by equally heart stopping cauliflower in a pickled onion and spice sauce, we sat under a glowing star sculpture and sipped cocktails that cost as much as three days worth of breakfast bagels, and then we ordered EVEN MORE FOOD. The brussels sprouts were thick and crispy on top but cooked perfectly inside, with a balsamic- vinegar zing and a certain juiciness that’s hard to keep alive when roasting a very acquired vegetable. I ate at least forty five without blinking, enjoying the taste of a fresh but hearty starter dish and willing myself not to regret not ordering the truffle pasta. No worries there- the salad with avocado and arugula delicately thrown onto a plate was more than satisfactory and the CONE OF FRENCH FRIES WORTH A FIRSTBORN gave me the salt and starch I was craving. Imagine the most perfectly crunchy but supple fries coated in sea salt and served with garlic aioli dipping sauce and then imagine eating that in a hot spring bath in Iceland because that’s how it felt. Like I was in the most relaxing place in the world giving myself heart palpitations because of all the sodium but not regretting a DAMN MOMENT OF IT. I fell in LOVE with Gilt Bar instantly and want to go back many, many times seeing as there’s a lobster roll on the menu and about 100 dessert items I did not try due to being A) an unemployed college student unworthy of it and B) I like leaving things to go back to! There’s nothing better than going to a restaurant and knowing you love it and it’s going to be good, but a billion new options to pick from. I am so jazzed on brussels sprouts y’all. Except I’m also so, so full and that’s why I didn’t go out to the bars tonight for any of my friends reading this @ Kelly’s on Webster. Also if you’re at Kelly’s, yikes and good luck.
Until next time, Happy Eating!
