♘: cuddling in a blanket fort
Rizzy scrunched her nose, her giggles near-uncontrollable. “Shock’s gonna be so shocked.”
Mia smiled and huddled deeper into the fortress blankets. She suddenly felt self-conscious of her messy bedhead and Tweety bird pajamas... Maybe calling Shock over first thing in the morning after their sleepover to indulge in the wonders of their blanket fort wasn’t a good idea. “I think we should get dressed first...” she said.
There was a sharp knock on the door. Rizzy’s phone beeped on the table next to them. A fresh text appeared on the screen, a brief and simple I’m here. Rizzy jumped out of the blankets and disappeared into the other room to answer the door. Mia combed her fingers through her hair.
Rizzy’s voice drifted through the halls and became clear just a second later. “...So we stayed up all night and we made this amazing pillow fort and I thought it would be such a waste to destroy it before you got to see it, too,” Rizzy said, appearing in the doorway of the living room with Shock right on her heels.
Mia felt herself shrink under Shock’s gaze. Rizzy was right, he was surprised. Mia, however, was afriad that he was more surprised over her glorious I-just-slept-ten-hours-with-Rizzy’s-knee-jabbing-into-my-back morning state than the floor-to-ceiling architectural wonder before him. “Yeah it’s... definitely something,” was all Shock managed to say.
Somewhere in the house, a timer beeped. This wasn’t unusual; Rizzy’s house was always filled with sudden noises and busy energy. “Oh, that’s breakfast!” Rizzy exclaimed, running again into her kitchen. Mia tucked her hair behind her ear. Shock rubbed his neck.
“Do you...want to come in?” Mia said softly.
Shock was already on his hands and knees, crawling through the Rizzy-sized fort entrance. “Sure,” he replied. They sat together in silence. Soft, hazy morning light filtered through the windows and the bright pink blankets. Shock glanced around. “Do you ever get tired of all this pink?”
Mia giggled, “Not really, no.”
Shock looked tired. Dark circles hung under his eyes and he probably hadn’t had any coffee yet and Mia couldn’t help but worry that he’d stayed up too late on his computer again. Despite all of this, his smile was small and gentle. “That’s good,” he said. “It suits you.”
