“can’t you see? i’ve always loved you.”
STRAP IN, FOLKS, BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING AT FRIENDS TO LOVERS WITH THE TALENTED GINNY WEASLEY, AND THAT HAS TO GO A LITTLE SOMETHING LIKE THIS...
you and ginny have been friends for a long time
a really, really l o n g time
you live by the weasleys, and since ginny was often left out of the boy’s shenanigans, the two of you would hang out
you’d play a lot of quidditch and steal molly’s gossip magazines
you guys were the closest friends possible
so when hogwarts rolled around, things were only bound to get better
and, all things considered, it was better
you got to hang out in the library and the great hall during the day
you would try to sneak out at night to hang out, but somehow fred and george always managed to catch you in your first and second years
she was distant after getting trapped in the chamber of secrets
she was more quiet... more sad
but nothing could get in the way of your friendship. you would make sure of it.
you spent as much time as possible with her, hanging out in the gryffindor common room (even if you aren’t a gryffindor!) and talking in hushed tones in the corner
you also got to be friends with fred and george during this time, seeing as they were so close to their only sister
they would give you sweets - sometimes prototypes for their joke shop - and they became like older brothers to you, too
in your third year, you guys used to sneak out together all the time - ginny was always mischievous, and she could never sleep at night
you tried to pry, but to no avail
she was seemingly putting the chamber of secrets behind her, and you were happy for her
besides, you two had other important things to do - like spy on the beauxbatons and durmstrang students, giggling about which ones were the most attractive, which ones were the most similar to each hogwarts student, and which ones ginny could totally win in a duel with
in your fourth year, things took an interesting turn with umbridge
but you were both vvv satisfied with being a part of the d.a., and sometimes you would go to the room of requirement just to hang out after curfew
she was also getting over her crush on harry, and you were happy for her. you always thought she was waisting her time with her crush, even if you didn’t say anything
it was around this same time that fred and george (self-proclaimed wingmen, a packaged deal) started to tease you about your crush
“it’s pretty obvious, if you ask us.”
“i do not have a crush on ginny!”
and they had identical grins that you wanted to slap off
“what are you guys talking about?”
ginny always managed to be there when they were trying to be oh-so-smooth with their prodding
“they were just leaving.”
it was in your fifth year that things started to get tricky
ginny started d a t i n g
and as a good friend, you were happy for her.
but there was something in the pit of your stomach that you couldn’t let go of whenever you saw her with dean thomas or someone else.
the only blessing was that fred and george weren’t there to tease you about jealousy
meanwhile, ginny was having a problem of her own
she liked you... but what would she do?
you had never seemed to be interested in anyone. were you a lost cause?
she would go on dates to distract herself. one crush to another, huh? first harry and now (y/n). she needed to find someone that she could actually be with.
her plan didn’t seem to work
you would have lots of little arguments that had no weight to them because both of you had to get your frustrations out somehow
funny enough, while most of your mutual friends didn’t seem to understand what was happening, luna did
she, however, didn’t really meddle with things because that’s not luna.
but when hermione was ranting about how stupid your arguments were, luna told her
so, at this point, everyone knows that you guys are in love with each other, their just waiting for it to all blow over
it only got worse at a gryffindor party when the two of you were definitely drunk and you were on a high that was just enough to give you the bad idea of forgetting ginny for one night
what could go wrong, right? she already has her boyfriend, weren’t you allowed a bit of happiness?
so you found the first willing person that you thought was sweet and good looking and pulled them out into the hall
you were kissing deeply when ginny found you, looking for her own makeout spot
she pulled the two of you apart, and the two of you had a very loud argument
“them? really, (y/n)? i thought you had class!”
“oh, so only you are allowed to have flings? forgive me, i forgot that only the amazing ginny weasley is allowed happiness!”
“that’s not what this is about!”
“and you’ve loved everyone that you’ve gotten with? that’s rich.”
“—you just don’t want me to be happy! you can do whatever you want, and i have to pray that one day you’ll open your eyes, huh? i just have to wait?”
and you storm off before another word can be said
the two of you s e e t h e for weeks, unable to look in each others eyes
but, then another one of ginny’s relationships flops, so you two are talking about it late at night, in your common room
you were the only one she could ever be vulnerable around, even if you did fight more often than you had civil conversations, these days.
“you don’t need them, ginny - you’ve never needed anyone. they’re stupid for having ever let you go.”
“but i need someone, (y/n).”
and there’s bitterness in your voice and you can’t help but think ‘aren’t i enough?’
“i can still hear tom riddles voice in my head, and i need someone to stop it. i can’t be alone with him.”
and shame and understanding floods you
“and you’re not alone. you’ll always have me.”
“i know... but i need more than a friend.”
and you consider your next words carefully
“you really don’t listen to a word i say, do you? i’ve always been waiting for you to open your eyes, ginny. i love you. i’ve always tried to be that someone.”
“...i’ve been a terrible friend - jealous and rude and nowhere near what you deserve—”
“—that depends on your perspective.”
“...but i love you, too.”
