This song is long, but give it a chance. JUST LIKE WE GAVE PIZZA A CHANCE.
14 for 14.
Oh, another list! You must be so excited, because clearly you haven’t been swamped by enough end of year lists already. As many as there are - it is a nice place to nit pick through the mass of releases over the last 12 months. A substantial amount of music has delighted our ears on a daily basis this year - and we'd love for you to indulge in the beauty of them too. I personally fell in love with Kevin Morby's sound this year, got down to Sinkane, got up to The Juan Maclean, went wild to King Gizzard, figured shit out with Angel Olsen, was calmed by Quilt, simply blown away by Adult Jazz, soundtracked my working day with Mazes - it was a brilliant year for music. In no particular order (it is alphabetical) here are Deafen County’s 14 must listens of 2014: Adult Jazz - Gist Is
Alvvays - Alvvays
Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Witness
Goat - Commune
Kevin Morby - Still Life
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - In My Mind Fuzz
Mazes - Wooden Aquarium
Natural Child - Dancin’ With Wolves
Quilt - Held In Splendor
Sinkane - Mean Love
The Juan Maclean - In A Dream
The Shivas - You Know What To Do
TOPS - Picture You Staring
Ty Segall - Manipulator
ADULT JAZZ - Springful This quartett reminds me a bit of Alt-J or the early Foals when they were still singing "Cassius away". On the 4th of August they released their album "Gist Is" and currently they are touring the UK and Europe. The well-thought-out entry of their instruments combined with the smooth voice of the lead singer and soft harmonies make me wanna lay back and dream of the summer.
Hear Gist Is in its entirety ahead of release next week
Beirut meets Dirty Projectors meets Tune-Yards meets STOMP does jazz wouldn't even come close to describing this album. It's a mismatch of sounds, with as many integral parts, pieces, melodies and layers as one can compact into a series of breathtaking tracks and still label it as cohesive. Take 'Donne Tongue,' for example, which juxtaposes sharp electric guitars with smooth, elongated vocals. Or 'Springful,' which starts out slow and sleepy, but beautifully begins to swirl upbeat, introducing heavier percussion and at 3:09 bursts a clattering almost like metallic birds chirping. 'Spook' took its time and for that, I'm thankful. It has vibes reminiscent of Bloc Party's 'Blue Light,' kind of that dreamy, perfect-for-road-trips-at-dusk song. All in all, Gist Is is a smorgasbord of sounds that fit delicately into an album that demands your every bit of attention and urges you to slow down and listen.
