It’s weird that it’s controversial because it was there from episode one. People just like to complain. Trish’s story was one of the best storylines on TV
Thank you! And personally, for me, I thought it was brave for the writers to go there with her, because it’s not often that you see a heroically-inclined abuse victim go on to perpetuate abusive/violent behavior. Usually they go, “I’ve learned from my abuser’s mistakes and will never become like them,” and that’s that. But Jessica Jones as a series has always had nuance when discussing how people respond to being abused (Trish, Jessica, Malcolm, Kilgrave, etc.--all of them respond in different ways), and have always laid down the truth that being abused does not excuse being abusive towards other people (the “You blame bad parenting?” line comes to mind). That, and I’d so much rather have complicated women characters--who can and do fuck up sometimes--than women characters who can do no wrong.
AND, while I know some people think that it’s unfair that Trish got “punished” for doing the exact same things some of the male Marvel vigilantes were doing, I think it’s also important to look at Jessica Jones as its own story--and when you have someone like Jessica in the mix, who has always had some very clear beliefs on when it is and isn’t acceptable to kill people, you’re going to get a result like this. That and the narrative then challenges Jessica in a way it’s been dancing with since season two--how will you handle the person you love the most doing something you know is wrong? Will you excuse it because she’s important to you, or will you do the right thing and make sure she can’t hurt anymore people? It’s part of the discussion of abuse, albeit it means that Jessica loses Trish. Which is super sad, don’t get me wrong--I’m not a huge fan of Jess having no one in her life, in the end--but if you don’t challenge your protagonist that way, you’re not going to get as compelling a story.
So yeah, Trish’s fate broke my heart, but god if it wasn’t good writing.
