Ah fuck it. No War AU.
Chicago never happened. The union is a fringe extremist group that never gained any momentum and remains kinda fizzled out in the background. There is no big international conflict to fight. Gen:lock is being built as a humanitarian/engineering/emergency response project.
Chase never goes down in the battle of Chicago, and is therefore, still a regular human being. He still becomes a pilot, though instead of being a combat pilot, he flies for emergency services in the US, airlifting injured civilians and delivering supplies to and from hard to reach spaces. He is very much the Julian Chase that he was before the war started in canon. Cheery and bright. Loves a good prank. Brings Dri around everywhere he can so he can show off all the cool spots he knows. Roberta sends him out with home cooked treats whenever she can. Is tested and recruited out of the US air ambulance program for Gen:lock.
Yaz is also a pilot for emergency services and humanitarian aid. She works internationally, flying for the Polity’s version of the red cross. She's a lot lighter and chirpier in this universe, loves to sing and dance, and will often be heard humming as she goes about her routine. Still more reserved than the rest of the team but carries herself with more cheer than her canon counterpart. Wears her hijab most days, especially when out of uniform, and loves finding pretty fabrics for them. Is tested and recruited out of the red cross humanitarian program for Gen:lock. Weller is alive and remains alive in this continuity, and he very much becomes a third parent/host parent to her, though she remains in close contact with her own parents back in Iran.
Cammie is still a hacker. Like her canon counterpart, was caught hacking the Polity for fun and a quick buck, accepted a plea deal to become a white hat hacker/cyber informant to the polity in exchange for a suspended/lighter sentence. Gets pulled into the Gen:lock program early as a programmer/engineer for the project. Is tested Gen:Lock compatible, though different from her canon counterpart, remains a non-active member until she turns 18, and does not become a full time member until 20/21. She takes her time to train up, and definitely spends a lot of her time around the rest of the gen:lock crew, but without the war, and therefore less of a need for active members right at the start, she takes her time to grow with the program before committing fully. She becomes the program’s leading programmer/software engineer even before becoming a fully active member of the team.
Kazu, the same as his canon counterpart, still joins the army, and similarly, is assigned a position as a cook and a support due to his still very headstrong personality and brash tendencies. Rather than accept this for the rest of his career, he applies to be transferred to another branch of the Polity, and ends up floating between various positions in various branches internationally on short term contract jobs. It’s generally manual labour or entry level mechanics wherever he gets shipped to, but to him, getting to travel to different countries and just experience life somewhat without responsibilities is better than being shoved into the kitchen. He’s on a contract job with the US division of the polity when he’s assigned to an experimental science project and works on putting together mechanical parts for some of the earliest prototype holons. It’s here that he’s tested Gen:Lock compatible and joins up with the team, mostly to live out his childhood mecha dreams.
Val/entina grows up in the Russian foster care system. Without the strain of the war, they are lucky enough to be placed with a Ukrainian foster home for the majority of their adolescence before ageing out. Feeling a bit lost in life, they drift for a little, from job to job, not really striking home with anything until they start training in social work, and eventually from there, in first aid and paramedicine with the Ukrainian branch of the Polity/red cross. They work for a while in these roles before being tested and recruited into Gen:lock. They are the same Val/entina we see as in canon, but less jaded and tired. They are hopeful for the world and making a difference, knowing that things have always and will always work out.
Sooooo. RL progress has in fact been slow on account of life, but I did this mostly on a flight soooo. Have some shogun sniper my lovelys

I've been doing some doodles and smaller pieces while my thesis and uni work keeps me from working on RL. Here's me playing with screen tones and shading :3

/// [ HUMA:02 ] ///
Made my own mecha headset inspired by Gen:Lock's Huma, aka Yaz's holon! This was mostly a test to figure out how to work with EVA foam and spray paint but it turned out okay! Battle damage courtesy of the yellow paint reacting weirdly with the primer coats :P
Additionally, wore these to uni earlier this week and one of my classmates immediately clocked that I'm a cosplayer woot 😅
