Name: Glacialisaurus hammeri
Described By: Smith & Pol
Classification: Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Sauropodmorpha, Plateosauria, Massopoda, Massospondylidae
Glacialisaurus was - you guessed it - a sauropodomorph, specifically a massospondylid. It is known from a partial hind limb including the femur and the foot. It is the first sauropodmorph known from Antarctica, hence its frigid name. In fact, it was found in the Hanson Formation from Antarctica, dating back to the Sinemurian age of the Early Jurassic, about 189-183 million years ago. This makes Glacialisaurus just one in a large number of dinosaurs being discovered in Antarctica. It was probably closely related to Lufngosaurus from China. It also lived alongside primitive sauropods, indicating that non-sauropod sauropodomorphs and sauropods did live alongside each other in the Early Jurassic. It also lived alongside Cryolophosaurus, which may have been a predatory threat to this dinosaur.
