“(Y/N).” Your eyes met Hau’s across the circle, and you could see his grin. “Truth or dare?”
Hau was devious with truth or dare. He would come up with the most embarrassing truths and the most challenging dares. But the grin on his face suggested he had something in mind for you, something you didn’t want to be a part of. But you were no coward.
“Dare,” you replied confidently, and Hau’s grin grew wider.
You’d played into his hands. That was not good.
“I dare you to tell him.”
Those words were enough. Hau didn’t want to spoil the surprise, and you understood exactly who he meant and what he meant. You also knew there was no getting out of this, Hau had you trapped.
“Tell who what?” Lillie asked, and Hau just grinned.
Everyone’s eyes were on you now. Lillie’s curious gaze, Hau’s devilish grin, Moon’s silent stare, Gladion’s bored expression that still managed to make your heart burn at the sight of those eyes looking at you. You swallowed your fear and looked into those green eyes.
“Ikindamaybealittlebitlikeyou,” you mumbled, rushed and nervous.
“Speak up, (Y/N).” Hau’s grin still wasn’t gone, and you wanted to smack it off his face. You looked back to Gladion.
“I like you,” you blurted, causing him to blink, what seemed like surprise going across his face. “Like, I like you. Not as a friend, as uh, as a-”
“I get it,” Gladion cut you off sharply, averting his gaze from the circle. You grew nervous. Did he not like you?
“I’m sorry,” you panicked, backing away from the circle. “I shouldn’t have pushed that on you so suddenly, I-”
“S-Shut up, (Y/N).” Gladion sounded nervous. He edged away from the group, standing hesitantly. “I-I’m going to go. I’m… not feeling well. Bye.” He all but ran off, leaving you, Hau, Lillie and Moon alone in the circle.
You felt a pain in your chest you weren’t sure you’d ever felt. You stood and walked away as well. You actually had a reason, however. You were going to get the snacks. Walking past the bathroom on the way to the kitchen, you heard a familiar voice. Gladion was talking to himself.
“He likes me. Why does he have to like me, this is strange enough without these complications! What am I supposed to do about this? I don’t understand any of this!”
You walked away, unsure what to take away from what you’d heard. You grabbed the bag of chips you’d bought earlier, pouring them into a large bowl with a sigh. You were carrying it back to the group when you heard a crash and a cry come from the bathroom. You lay the bowl on the ground and flung open the unlocked door, seeing Gladion sprawled on the floor, shards of glass around him. One was in his leg.
“What happened?” you cried, staring at the mess.
Gladion said nothing. On closer inspection, his eyes seemed to be wide open and glazed, and his fingers were twitching occasionally.
“Gladion! Gladion, look at me!” you shouted, and the barely responsive boy blinked, his head shifting slightly.
“(Y/N)?” His voice was faint, he was still not moving.
“Yes, it’s me!” you were panicking. “I don’t know what to do, oh gods what do I do?”
He stared blankly at your face. He’d hit his head, you noticed, as there was a small trickle of blood coming from somewhere under his blond hair, staining it crimson.
“Hang on, please, oh please hang on…” you said, gripping his shoulders and trying to keep him awake.
“(Y/N)… you’re so… pretty…” he said softly, staring at your face. “You’re so… so… amazing.”
“Gladion, stay with me,” you said softly. “I’m going to call an ambulance.”
You wrapped your arms around him when he came out of the hospital, and you cried.
“You’re okay,” you whispered. “I was so worried you wouldn’t be okay.”
To your surprise, he hugged you back.
“You called me pretty,” you said quietly. “You told me I was amazing. But I’m not, I’m useless. I panicked and you could probably have died…”
“You are amazing,” Gladion said gently. “I love you, (Y/N). I ran off that night because I panicked. I-I’m not good with emotions.”
You cried tears of relief, and you clutched his sweater in your hands, breathing in his scent. He smelled of the flowers blooming in the meadow, of Pokemon and nature. He smelled alive.
You hoped that smell would never die.
