Eric Fischl, Bathers

This are paintings done on glassine a paper similar to tracing paper with a glossy finish done by Fischl. He used glassine because he struggled with composition and laying out the ideas in his head.

I was hesitant to paint the third body as I was very happy with how the painting was. I was inspired by Fischl and painted in the third figure on glassine. I used watered down paint so it would drip and give the figure a withered effect. I would like to go in and add more detail but I really like the effect it gave and that I still have the painting as it was.

Eric Fischl (Glassine Paintings)

In yesterdays "exploring mark making using drapery" workshop, we worked on glassine, a clear, non-absorbent paper. I emailed Sylvia after the workshop to ask for the name of the material, as I had forgotten, and she recommended this artist to me.

Eric Fischl was an American painter known for his depictions of suburbia. He used glassine to build layers of narratives and create a story. In his glassine paintings, figures interact with their interiors in visually interesting ways.

I am inspired to use glassine in my own work. I am thinking of ways I could use the translucency to show different representations of myself.
