The wonderful Glaucium corniculatum (red horned poppy) is a biennial that forms a rosette of silver-grey leaves and then produces branched stems of red flowers, usually with a black spot at the base of each petal. The flowers are followed by long narrow seed pods. These plants need a well-drained soil in full sun and resent root disturbance.

Glaucium flavum

This poppy, with wonderfully-textured bluish leaves and yellow flowers, has a wide distribution around the Mediterranean basin and northward through Europe. It has a reputation for re-seeding vigorously, so we will be keeping a close eye on it to make sure it does not wear out its welcome. We hope it will not be a problem, because the leaves are so ornamental, and the yellow flowers complement them beautifully.

On the beach in Deal, Kent, the Glaucium flavum (yellow horned-poppy) is flowering and setting seed. This coastal plant grows on shingle beaches, cliffs and sand dunes. It is a short-lived perennial and often grown as a biennial. The golden-yellow flowers appear in June and are followed curling seedpods known as the 'horns'. When the plant is broken it exudes a yellow sap which is poisonous.

Glaucium flavum. Searching the internet for information on the Yellow Horned Poppy is an interesting exercise in differing perspectives. Some sources consider it a most wonderful ornamental plant for its large colorful flowers and ability to reseed itself year after year. Others consider it a noxious weed. All parts of the plant (including the seeds) are apparently toxic. It is banned in Massachusetts. Glaucium flavum is native to Europe, Northern Africa and Asia. It prefers to grow on shorelines and disturbed areas.
