I think it's hilarious how Glinda just won't let Elphaba leave that bed and she tried so hard to make her stay there. Like, girl don't make it THAT obvious that you want her 😭😭😭

you know what? even if Elphaba believed Glinda when she said "you're beautiful" and didn't believe Fiyero, any take that doesn't include the different contexts of those situations are irrelevant. Glinda has just spent an entire song (not maliciously!) trying to make Elphaba more paletteable and 'normal', and while she does scale back her "project" considerably to just removing her glasses and giving her a flower, and it is the nicest thing about her appearance someone has probably ever said, there's still the context of changing her. but yes, let's say Elphaba took it genuinely.

Fiyero says it to her after AT LEAST A YEAR ON THE RUN where she has been nationally villainized in charicatures that he JUST SAW THAT SHE COLLECTS IN HER HOUSE and that SHE KNOWS HE HAS SEEN AND MAYBE EVEN PARTICIPATED IN. in the movie, he canonically called her a Wicked Witch and was HUNTING HER while she was there!!! he says he's changed, but this is the moment of truth where he can't go back and he's looking at reminders of how much people hate her (and the probably embarassing fact that she keeps propaganda about herself). and he's looking at the propaganda that he's been looking at for at least a year and he looks up and he Looks At Her and he says she's beautiful. and when she presses, he says that it's Him (and by extension Society) that need to change for Her, not Her changing for Him/Society. the burden to prove herself is finally not on her! the world needs to look at things differently and then they will see the truth-- that she IS beautiful! as she comes! even after so long of not seeing her real face and hearing horrid things about her SHE'S BEAUTIFUL.

not to let my nuts and dolts slip show here but i do think part of the beautiful, perfect tragedy of gelphie-- part of what makes me froth at the MOUTH over them-- is that i truly believe that in musical canon Glinda doesn't realize she's in love with Elphaba (and has been for years) until the moment Dorothy throws the bucket

and the first second she finally understands what she actually wants and how to get it is the same second it becomes impossible

and in that second she feels a part of her she didn't even know was there die right along with elphie

Hot take: Gelphie would have been canon in the films if they didn't have to follow the story that was originated with the live production and they didn't have to stay true to the source material of the novel.

They couldn't change the whole ass story just to have them end up together because people were expecting a faithful reenactment of it.

They could expand on it in making small amendments and additions but they couldn't just throw out an already established story for the cause of making Gelphie canon. It would have completely changed it because it's not supposed to be a happily ever after type of ending. It's supposed to be that tragic star-crossed lovers ending of "Juliet takes the poison because she believes Romeo to be dead" without physically dying. But try to convince me Glinda isn't as dead inside.

They couldn't change that even if they also wanted it to be canon.

True SOME live productions of Wicked have made them canon over the years... but that was just a reinterpretation of the source material that critics wouldn't have cared happened. But this is 2 feature films and it would have completely turned the entire story of it on its head.

It's a very successful tragic story and nobody wanted that to change. Not even the fans that view Gelphie as the real love story of Wicked.
