Love how GlomTales kicked off the Theme Somg Takeovers actually.
*EDIT: I wanted to reaffirm that I DO NOT dislike Della. She’s one of my favorite characters and I love her as a character. This is just something that occurred to me when I was rewatching the show, specifically when I got to “What Ever Happened to Della Duck” and “GlomTales.*
I can understand why people have criticized Della for the way she grounded Louie. Forcing him to stay in his room. Literally. She had Gyro program that robot, DT87, to make sure he was stuck in there.
I can’t fully justify her actions. But I can somewhat understand her mindset.
So, here’s my argument.
As a child, she was not disciplined enough or at all. Never scolded for a lot of her actions. From what we saw in “First Adventure”, she (and Donald) set a firecracker under her father’s chair which caused him to be hospitalized. It’s been established that she was already very reckless and impulsive.
That only got worse as she grew up adventuring with Scrooge who was just as bad.
Then the Spear of Selene incident happened.
Della being stuck in an isolating environment with nobody but herself is most likely the first time in her life that she actually reflected on her actions and realized how much harm she did, not just to herself but to her family, as well.
That scenario is why she thought the correct way to ground Louie was to literally keep him stuck in his room with no connection to anyone else and the inability to go anywhere else in the mansion.
So, I've been watching clips and reviews of Glomtales and...
This doesn't look like a "stun" Lazer at all, the fact Louie is WINCING IN PAIN makes it clear it's a SHOCK LAZER. What in the world was Della thinking [especially since she KNEW Gyro's inventions go haywire, hence when the DT-87 first shows up her video straight up says "hope it doesn't turn evil on you"]? Frankly she should've been the one to watch Louie while he was [rightfully] grounded for his actions in Timephoon. Though it sure is funny how Dewey got off scot-free for crashing the plane and doing other reckless actions during the Kit Cloudkicker episode. Oh yeah, and not to mention the fact the Duckworth doesn't even care about Louie or Scrooge's family, he only cares about Scrooge. As well as the fact that Della, Scrooge, and Beakley knew perfectly well that Scrooge has many enemies that could invade the mansion at any time. If they were REALLY going to go with the DT-87, they should've at least kept it outside of the manor while someone else watches Louie.
The fact that people are either ignoring how Louie seemed to be in actual PHYSICAL pain from this really gets me [and the only reason Bouncer Beagle was unaffected by the lazers is because of cartoon logic, which Louie doesn't have as edvidenced by this screenshot and other clips of DT-87 blasting at him with the lazer]. Again, Louie genuinely deserved to be grounded for Timephoon, but this was too much IMO. And don't give me the "but DT-87 only shocked Louie when he was scheming", as that is no excuse to cause clear PHYSICAL pain with an ELECTRIC LAZER.
Della may have "improved" in later seasons, but the fact that she never has a bonding episode with Louie [note in Moonvasion that LOUIE had to be the one to start the conversation], and her pretty clear and obvious favoritism towards Dewey has made me dislike her. Edit: I don't COMPLETELY dislike Della, as I like her Season 3 persona, but I really wish we didn't have to have Glomtales [and by extension Timephoon as I feel like it damaged Louie's character in a couple of ways], to get to that point.
In fairness, I also dislike this version of Scrooge and Beakley as well. Scrooge for encouraging recklessness and never once teaching the kids that actions have consequences until after the Timephoon. Beakley for similar reasons plus how she kept Webby locked up in the mansion for most of her life.
While I still love Donald in this version, he's not a saint, and frankly he should've done something about Louie's greed [specifically Louie's fake charity] before any of this had to happen. So much could've been avoided had Donald been more responsible.
And Launchpad went with Louie during Timephoon and could've and SHOULD HAVE stopped him from getting the Time Tub in the first place.
Louie isn't innocent but I genuinely feel that he and the other Duck Kids were failed by literally every adult in this show. Except for maybe Fenton and Drake Mallard [who wasn't even present with any of these events, and was only used maybe once or twice].
I genuinely wish there was an episode where the villains hacked the DT-87 robot and had it zap and imprison everyone but Louie, who now has to save the day, just so they can see how Louie felt. Bonus points if Della decides to take Louie to Big Rock Candy Mountain [the fact we don't get any confirmation on if he was able to go after the grounding was over frustrates me], as a huge apology for this. Triple points if Louie DESTROYS the DT-87 robot with Gyro admitting that the DT-87 was a bad idea to begin with.
Stuff like this is EXACTLY why I'd rather stick to the 1987 Ducktales, the comics, and now I'd even go as far as to say I'd watch QUACK PACK instead. Granted, the adults still have a LONG WAY to go [and can still be pretty cruel], but at least those pieces of media are relics of their time. Ducktales 2017 literally has no excuse for this.
Still In Progress: The Portrayal of Adoption in Media
I need to be better about posting snippets of projects. It'll hopefully attract new people to also take a look at mutual aid posts to get them more traction.
Been working on the Adoption in Media video for a while now It's researched and mostly written already. It's just a matter of finding the time and spoons to bring it together and edit it.
To put this in perspective, research alone took several months of reading and input! I'm very excited to get this off the ground though.
It'll go over The history of adoption as an institution, including Georgia Tann, ICE and the police's relationship to adoption, social workers, Korean, African, and Chinese transnational adoptions, the 60's scoop, ICWA, Native cultural erasure, and far more from a Black leftist lens.
In addition, the plan is to analyze The Blind Side, two episodes of The Simpsons: including Goo Goo Gai Pan and Carl Carlson Rides Again. Next will be the portrayal of adoption in the 2017 Ducktales reboot, and then the portrayal of adoption in Bojack Horseman.
For brevity's sake I'll try and cover different subcategories throughout the coming weeks based on each piece of media. This Post will cover a general outline of the Ducktales section.
Spoilers below cut: Ducktales (2017)
ROUND #1
Which episode is the best?
Timephoon!
GlomTales!
wildly unpopular ducktales 2017 opinion
BUT I think that Louies punishment in Timephoon/Glomtales was unfair SOLELY BECAUSE they go on the one adventure he ALWAYS WANTED TO GO ON!!!
He definitely deserved punishment Im not debating that but going to the place he wanted to go to when he was grounded seems unnecessarily mean :(
(I love Louie hes my fav)
