My Top 50 Albums of 2014: #8 Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires - Dereconstructed
Anchored by buzzsaw guitars straight out of Raw Power, heartfelt politically charges lyrics and a driving rythm section, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires play fire and brimstone rock and roll that's punishing, provocative and southern as fuck. Dereconstructed is both a love letter and vicious take down of southern culture as Bains obviously loves where he's from and is frustrated by so many of the things that occur there. Being from Minnesota I don't fully comprehend everything he's singing about but his passion and the power of the songs still ring true.
Musically the Glory Fires attack your eardrums with guitars turned to eleven and punishing riffs that are impossible to not be bowled over by. "The Kudzu and the Concrete," "Flags," Burnpiles, Swimming Holes" and "We Dare Defend Our Rights" are straightforward rockers fueled by punk rock energy but intricate enough to satisfy fans of more technical fare. The groove orientated tracks ("The Weeds Downtown," "Mississippi Bottomland," "Dirt Track") are no less intense but do allow for a bit of breathing room. The albums masterpiece is the opening "The Company Man" which features the prominent Stooges type spirit and also Bains' most soulful vocals on the album.
Speaking of the vocals, the band has chosen to faithfully recreate their live sound in the studio and the result is that the vocals are mixed a lot lower than people are used to. It seems to be an odd choice at first since Bains' lyrics are so important to the songs but it does have the effect of having to reach for the lyric sheet thus making the lyrics become even more obvious. After repeated listenings, the mix becomes something of a non-issue as it's clear that this is what this band sounds like and at least to me, it's a thing of beauty. Dereconstructed is a loud, lively and wonderful journey into southern culture. It's an album that demands to be heard.
